One of television’s current longest-running crime shows will officially come to an end later this year on Paramount+.
Even though the steamer may be well-known as the hub for Taylor Sheridan dramas, it is also the main streaming home for shows that fall under the overall Paramount umbrella and houses well-known series such as Yellowjackets and Dexter: Resurrection. Soon, another fan-favorite series that originally aired on Showtime will be making its final bow.
Paramount+ has revealed that The Chi will premiere its eighth and final season later this year. Although an exact release date has not been confirmed, the streamer also shared new images from The Chi season 8 that tease what to expect from the character drama that contains elements of crime. Check out the images in the gallery below:
Debuting in January 2018 from creator Lena Waithe, The Chi begins with the tragic death of Coogie Johnson (played by Jahking Guillory). The character’s death, and specifically getting shot in the chest, serves as the inciting event that looms over the rest of the Chicago-set drama.
On the whole, the Showtime staple looks at how that fateful event shocked a community on the Southside of Chicago and connects the lives of The Chi characters that viewers will follow. In the final season, described as the coldest winter ever, life or death choices must be made, and it’s unclear who will be able to make them.
The cast of The Chi includes Jacob Latimore, Birgundi Baker, Luke James, Shamon Brown Jr., Michael V. Epps, Hannaha Hall, and Jason Weaver. Behind the scenes, the 20th Television production is executive produced by Waithe, who also appears in the series, alongside co-showrunners Justin Hillian for Hillianaire Productions and Jewel Coronel for Uncut Gems.
The Chi season 1 has a strong reception on Rotten Tomatoes, garnering 87% based on a relatively large sample of 47 reviews. Although subsequent seasons do not have ratings, as not enough reviews are tabulated, it’s the kind of show that comes roaring right out of the gate.
The latest news means that audiences can still have time to enjoy an underrated gem that has earned comparisons to The Wire. It’s the kind of story that continually surprises and evolves, tracking how one moment in time can change everything and demonstrating the kind of long-term and thoughtful continuity that makes The Chi a rewarding watch.
