The ‘Scrubs’ Revival Mentioning Ollie’s Name Doesn’t Mean JD’s Kids Will Appear This Season

Warning: Spoilers ahead for the Scrubs revival Episode 4, “My Poker Face.”Since Scrubs returned, it has largely seemed content with just surging forward, as if almost nothing has happened. Everything from the rebuilt Sacred Heart to the untouched, natural chemistry between the cast has made the sitcom’s revival feel almost exactly like it did in the 2000s. Still, there is an off-screen gap of over fifteen years that the audience knows almost nothing about. On the surface, it feels like Scrubs is consciously trying to avoid filling this gargantuan narrative blank. However, the show is actually drip-feeding key facts about the lost era as the new episodes continue to air.

The latest installment, “Poker Face,” includes one of the biggest reveals yet in this respect. It’s still very small, but it’s better than nothing. Despite the retcon of Scrubs Season 9, which revealed JD (Zach Braff) and Elliot (Sarah Chalke) had settled down together after the Season 8 finale, the revival has kept those two developments intact. Although now divorced, the two characters were quickly confirmed in “My Return” to have been married at some point. Plus, JD’s brief mention of having more than one kid in “My Return” strongly suggested he and Elliot had a child together during this time. “My Poker Face” finally confirms that, and a little more.

“My Poker Face” Finally Shares More About JD & Elliot’s Post-Divorce Life

JD’s return to Sacred Heart in the Scrubs revival’s pilot makes it seem like Braff’s character hasn’t seen or spoken to any of his friends and former colleagues in years. At the very least, any reunions sound like they’ve been pretty fleeting or have taken place remotely via phone calls or similar methods. So, with the implication that JD and Elliot had a child together off-screen, this alienation felt strange. Surely, they would have remained in touch to co-parent their child. As it turns out, that’s exactly the case, and “My Poker Face” proves it beyond doubt. After the previous episode, “My Rom-Com,” teased that JD and Elliot’s divorce appeared to come from an emotionally turbulent time in their lives (this is still pretty vague), “My Poker Face” actually tells the viewers something of substance.

They have a son named Ollie who splits his time between both parents. Furthermore, JD has just built a bunk bed for Ollie at his new place, as it’s almost his turn to have his son. Elliot also admits that she finds it difficult whenever Ollie isn’t with her, although the moment is largely played for laughs. As her one and only child, this is understandable. JD also has a son called Sam, whom he had with Kim (Elizabeth Banks) from when Scrubs was originally on the air. Surprisingly, neither Sam nor Ollie has yet appeared in the show since the revival. At present, the sitcom’s focus doesn’t seem to be on fleshing out the lore in this regard with any kind of urgency. So, don’t expect to be fully informed about JD’s life as a father (or Elliot’s as a mother) anytime soon.

The ‘Scrubs’ Revival Won’t Show Either of JD’s Kids This Season

I had already pretty much assumed this would be the case. If Sam or Ollie were going to show up in the remaining episodes, I figured it would happen right at the end of the ninth and final installment, or it wouldn’t happen at all. The revival just hasn’t shone any kind of meaningful spotlight on this part of JD’s life. It would surely have happened by now if that was the plan. Now we have the new Scrubs showrunner’s confirmation on the matter.

As reported by TVInsider, Aseem Batra – who has replaced creator Bill Lawrence in the showrunner’s chair this season – explained that there was initially a plan for JD’s kids to feature somewhere among the active batch of nine episodes. Then, “cutting [them] for time” became necessary. “It’s not about the kids,” she went on to say. While Batra also admitted that the complete omission of Sam and Ollie may have been an “over-correction” that stemmed from the revival’s focus on its main characters, she also confirmed that it was a deliberate choice to make this decision. Even one scene with Sam and/or Ollie would have been cool, but I can see where Batra is coming from. After all, there are already enough new and old Scrubs characters to try and fit into the episodes’ restrictive 21-minute runtimes.

Thankfully, it is the plan to expand the revival beyond the current run of episodes. If Scrubs gets renewed for further seasons after the upcoming finale, then introducing characters like Sam, Ollie, and even Kim is part of Batra’s roadmap: “That’s on our wish list of stuff to do,” she said. Of course, all this depends on how well the show performs during its nine-episode comeback tour. The reviews have been mostly positive so far, though. Therefore, it may only be a matter of time before we get some news about Scrubs being renewed, which could mean finally getting to learn more about JD’s life between the Season 8 finale and the revival’s pilot.
