Savannah Guthrie Makes Today Show Return

Even though the whereabouts of her mother Nancy Guthrie remain unclear, Savannah Guthrie returned to work on April 6.

The long-time Today Show co-anchor was in her usual chair next to Craig Melvin when the show began.

Wearing a bright yellow dress and surrounded by yellow roses, Savannah opened the show with a news story about Iran. While it seemed to be just another day at the office, it certainly was not.

As a tribute to the on-going search for Nancy, Craig wore a yellow tie and pocket square. In addition, all of the on-air talent wore yellow-ribbon pins in support of Savannah.

“It is good to be home,” Savannah told her co-anchor.

“Yes, it is good to have you back at home,” he responded.

“OK, here we go,” she said. “Ready or not, let’s do the news.”

Before starting his weather report, Al Roker observed that it was good to see Savannah back where she belongs. The supportive remarks were short, but sweet. But as a news veteran, Savannah is a tough cookie and maintained her composure.

Fans were lined up outside of Studio 1A as usual, though perhaps more enthusiastic. Some even held signs of support for Savannah, who was “excited to give them all a hug … I’m really feeling the love so much,” she added.

When Jenna Bush Hager joined the show with her Morning Boost segment, she quipped, “We don’t even need a boost, because we have our sunshine back,” referring to Guthrie.

At 8:30, Savannah got a little emotional checking out the signs on the plaza. “These signs are so beautiful,” she said. “I received so many letters — so much kindness to me and my family. We feel it. We feel your prayers, so thank you so much.”

Savannah had been away from the show since Nancy was abducted from her Tucson home on February 1. The joint investigation by the Pima County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI continues, although no suspect(s) has been identified. There has been no trace of Nancy, who is 84 and in poor health.
