Why Apple TV’s #1 Show Is Taking Over The U.S. (Even Beating Shrinking)

Although Apple TV’s latest hit series debuted back in April 2025, the dark dramedy has only become a major mainstream hit with its second outing. There are a lot of great Apple TV shows that viewers missed out on, from the musical parody Schmigadoon to the deservedly acclaimed psychological thriller Servant.

While these shows were critical hits upon their original release, they never gained the mainstream acclaim of shows like Ted Lasso or The Morning Show. Even the acclaimed comedy Shrinking, which stars Jason Segel and Harrison Ford, struggled to become a global success despite its stellar reviews. Shortly after it did, it was beaten to the streaming service’s number one spot by Your Friends And Neighbors.

A dark suburban dramedy, Your Friends And Neighbors is a satirical crime drama starring Jon Hamm. The series sees Hamm’s tragic anti-villain “Coop” attempt to keep his family in the luxurious lifestyle to which they have become accustomed by any means necessary. After Coop loses his job as a hedge fund manager, ‘by any means necessary’ means he resorts to burgling his own neighbors.

While this might sound like a classic ‘Start of Darkness’ story a la Breaking Bad, Your Friends And Neighbors doesn’t take itself quite as seriously as that earlier hit. Make no mistake, the nine-part crime drama is thrilling and features numerous unpredictable twists and moments of real tension and unease.

However, Your Friends And Neighbors has a more sardonic sense of humor than Breaking Bad or Netflix’s Ozark, two earlier portrayals of morally compromised middle-aged suburban men who slide into amoral criminality for the sake of maintaining their fortunes. Hamm’s Coop is as pathetic as he is waggish, and viewers are left both hating and compulsively watching him.

Your Friends And Neighbors Season 2’s Success Is Overdue

With a stellar ensemble cast that includes Aimee Carrero, Olivia Munn, and James Marsden, Your Friends And Neighbors more than earned the success that its second season has finally found at Apple TV. The show’s blend of tense, high-stakes crime and sharp satirical insights into the lives of the wealthy makes it a perfect fit for The White Lotus fans.

However, in an era when takedowns of the mega-rich abound, from Ready Or Not to Succession, to The Menu, to Triangle of Sadness, Saltburn, and Death of a Unicorn, Your Friends And Neighbors instead aiming its ire at the upper middle class feels sharper and more unexpected. This Jon Hamm vehicle is a lean, mean, unpredictable dramedy, making Your Friends And Neighbors season 2 a must-watch Apple TV show.
