With two episodes slated to be released weekly, Bosch: Legacy 3 will undoubtedly continue to explore whether Bosch crossed the legal line and had his daughter’s sexual abuser killed in jail. Which Books Will ‘Bosch: Legacy’ Season 3 Adapt?
Apart from the Harry and Maddie Bosch/Kurt Dockweiler storyline, Season 3 will adapt storylines from Michael Connelly’s 1993 novel The Black Ice (Bosch book #2) and the 2022 novel Desert Star (Ballard book #5). In The Black Ice, Harry is summoned to a motel homicide on Christmas night and finds a narcotics officer dead of an apparent suicide. Black Ice refers to a new type of drug the officer was mixed up in.
According to Connelly’s website, in Desert Star:
“A year has passed since LAPD detective Renée Ballard quit the force in the face of misogyny, demoralization, and endless red tape. Yet, after the chief of police himself tells her she can write her own ticket within the department, Ballard takes back her badge, leaving “the Late Show” to rebuild the cold case unit at the elite Robbery-Homicide Division.
For years, Harry Bosch has been working a case that haunts him but that he hasn’t been able to crack—the murder of an entire family by a psychopath who still walks free. Ballard makes Bosch an offer: come work with her as a volunteer investigator in the new Open-Unsolved Unit, and he can pursue his “white whale” with the resources of the LAPD behind him.
The two must put aside old resentments to work together again and close in on a dangerous killer.”

What Happened At the End of Bosch: Legacy Season 2?
Bosch: Legacy Season 2 left viewers dangling on a massive cliff following its finale in November 2023. The main conflict in Season 2 involved Maddie’s shocking abduction by Kurt Dockweiler (David Denman), a serial rapist known as Screen Cutter, named for his breaking-and-entering MO. As Maddie grapples with the traumatic event, Bosch goes ballistic in his attempt to find Dockweiler and bring him to justice. Of course, for Bosch, justice doesn’t necessarily mean jail time.
The most substantial thing to remember going into Bosch: Legacy Season 3 is what transpires in the Season 2 finale. Maddie learns that Bosch may have deliberately hired someone to kill Dockweiler in jail. If that turns out to be true, there’s no turning back for Bosch after going so far to protect Maddie, marking a moral tipping point for the character that has been building since the main series.

More vexing yet, fans have had to wait roughly 15 months to learn whether Bosch is guilty or not. At last glance, Maddie was left to wonder if a prisoner named Preston Borders was telling the truth when he suggested that Bosch hired him to kill Dockweiler in jail. While that storyline will undoubtedly resolve in Season 3, there’s also Honey’s new District Attorney storyline and the arrival of new LAPD officer Renee Ballard.
