The following article contains spoilers for The Pitt Season 2.
Last night, the highly acclaimed medical drama The Pitt returned to HBO Max with the premiere of Season 2. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch (Noah Wyle), Dana Evans (Katherine LaNasa), and Frank Langdon (Patrick Ball) are just a few of the many returning characters, including Mohan, McKay, Mel, and Santos. The cast recently sat down to chat with Entertainment Weekly, and they unpacked the very first episode of Season 2.
Episode 1 of Season 2, titled “7:00 A.M.” sees the night shift ending and Dr. Robby arriving on his last day of work before a sabbatical. The day is July 4, and it looks like a regular day at the extremely busy ER. Robby arrives on his motorcycle, while charge nurse Dana Evans also enters the center, hoping things won’t be chaotic. The usual are already there, only this time, their experience has made them stronger and wiser.
It is also the day when senior resident Frank Langdon returns to the ER after spending time in rehab for substance abuse issues. Talking to EW, Wyle addresses Robby’s surprising look when he realizes the doctor he has fired is back during his shift: “He was hoping that their shifts wouldn’t overlap and that he could get outta dodge before having to see him.”
Ball talks about Langdon’s extremely different attitude upon returning. The episode sees him apologizing to the patient he stole drugs from:
“It is really tricky when coming to terms with the ways in which you have wronged people. Probably, there’s a lot of people that don’t hate him near as much as he anticipates.”
The Pitt Season 2 premiere also sees Robby confronting the idea of being replaced during his absence. Dr. Baran Al-Hashimi, played by Sepideh Moafi, will be in charge once he goes on the months-long sabbatical, but early on in the episode, we see he’s not quite comfortable with Al-Hashimi and her ways. “I don’t know that he would really have be totally accepting of anybody that was moving into his role,” Wyle says about the new character.
Last night’s episode also introduced an entirely new element. Someone has abandoned a baby in the ER, and it’s up to the attending personnel to take care of the newborn. As they see the results of the tests in order to determine the baby’s health, Al-Hashimi reacts. It is a very strange and mysterious reaction that Moafi admits has to do with “a big spoiler.” She was in absolute shock before the credits rolled on Episode 1: “Her reaction to that baby, the abandoned baby, will make more sense later on in the season.”
‘The Pitt’ Has Already Been Renewed for a Third Season
Before Season 2 of The Pitt premiered last night, and thousands of fans of the medical drama revisited some of their favorite TV characters from last year, HBO gave the green light to extend the show. The Pitt has been renewed for a third season, following the company’s decision to tweak things around with the procedural and shorten the time between seasons.
The Pitt Season 2 returned less than one year after the first season wrapped up on HBO Max. With episode 15 currently being filmed, the fictional ER at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center won’t be taking a break any time soon, and it’s only a matter of whether all attending physicians will be returning for Season 3. In the meantime, let’s just sit back and enjoy the chaos that Season 2 will serve.
