James Gunn Explains How His Role in DC Studios Is Different from Kevin Feige’s at Marvel

It’s been several months since James Gunn has been actively working on the new DCU, after being named co-CEO of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran. In fact, the director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was already developing projects with competition from Marvel Studios, directing The Suicide Squad and writing a Superman movie.

However, now that Gunn has completely put his relationship with the Disney franchise behind him, he will dedicate himself fully to the future of Warner Bros. Discovery productions starring characters from the comic book company. Something similar to what Kevin Feige does at Marvel Studios, although not as similar as many believe.

Promoting the third and final installment of the adventures of the group led by Star-Lord, James and his brother Sean Gunn participated in Wired’s Auto-Complete Interview, where the director explained how his role differs from Feige’s:

“It’s actually a little different. I mean, number one, DC Studios is a studio, so it’s a little bit different. Peter Safran [co-CEO of DC Studios] does a lot of what Kevin Feige does. A lot of what I do is I just work on the creative side of things. So mapping out the stories and the creative side of the universe is my job much more so than some of the more administrative, executive-type stuff. And Kevin has to do both.”

As Gunn clarifies, he will be dedicating specifically to the creative aspects, while Safran will be in charge of working on the economic and production aspects of the future projects they develop. Faige, for his part, is much more like a producer but he’s also pretty involved in creative aspects, so Gunn is right when he says Marvel Studios’ head does both jobs.
