New Mysteries & Fresh Perspectives

School Spirits season 2 left viewers with a lot of questions as the show headed into its hiatus, wondering if there would be more of the Paramount+ original to provide answers. The series, which follows Maddie Nears (Peyton List) as she crossed from the realm of the living to the world of the dead at Split River high school, has spun mysteries throughout its first two seasons.

While there has been a ton of forward momentum throughout the first seasons of School Spirits, the second season was beginning to feel stagnant before it pulled out all the stops by season’s end. Viewers uncovered the true mystery surrounding Maddie by the end of the first season, revealing that she was never actually dead, then found out more about Mr. Martin (Josh Zuckerman) throughout the second.

As the ghosts and the living became closer with each passing episode, School Spirits has been building toward a massive convergence of the planes. As the second season came to a close with a few intensely emotional loose ends, some were fearful about the show’s future, but based on the first three episodes of the upcoming third season, School Spirits provides the answers its fans have been looking for.

As School Spirits season 3 gets started, viewers will be happy to see that their burning questions are answered quickly. While the show has been able to spend its seasons stretching out its big mysteries, the pacing has often felt too slow as the premise has become more familiar. School Spirits has had to make some big decisions about where it’s headed and how it’s getting there.

As the audience has felt more grounded in the world of the show, the gimmick of Maddie and the ghosts has become less surprising, but thankfully School Spirits season 3 doesn’t waste time getting to lingering stories. Viewers will get some answers about Maddie’s safety, Wally (Milo Manheim) seemingly crossing over, and what’s going on with Simon (Kristian Ventura), along with other loose ends.

As School Spirits has continued through its first seasons, one of the audiences’ biggest gripes has been how the show balances stories between the living and the dead. The mechanics of School Spirits have been explored throughout the last seasons, and while it’s not always entirely clear where the line between living and dead, the exploration of how “scars” work within the universe has been helpful.

While the series has spent two seasons exploring the world through one lens, School Spirits season 3 upends itself and establishes an entirely new baseline. A refresh that the series didn’t necessarily need, it feels great to see a new normal explored within the world of the series. The other piece of the evolving puzzle is a group of new faces to Split River.

The most exciting addition, despite only appearing in an ancillary role within the first trio of episodes, is Jennifer Tilley. Joining the series as Dr. Deborah Hunter-Price, Tilley amplifies the shift in tone, bringing a sharp, darkly comedic energy to the wider story. The resolution of season 2’s storylines allow for more space for new complications, and with changes coming in every direction, School Spirits feels refreshed.

With tensions building toward a new issue presented within the first hour of School Spirits season 3, it’s clear that the show is choosing to branch out from its original premise. New mysteries crop up quickly, and as tensions rise between the characters while roles shift, School Spirits is able to balance everything with grace.

Keeping the tension with its core cast of living and dead continuing to explore their enmeshed world, School Spirits adds new elements to the story that ensure viewers will be theorizing about what’s been happening and what’s to come all season long.
