A British expat who has spent three years living in Australia says he will “genuinely never get over” the cost of a pint of beer.

Luke Tweddle has been open that Australia is the finest country he has ever resided in and that the advantages far outweigh the drawbacks. Nevertheless, speaking recently, he also revealed why he would be heading back to the UK due to three issues.

Since then, the content creator, originally from Surrey, has shared a video in which he attempted to get by in Australia on a typical UK salary with a take-home income of £2,500 per month.

He noted that average salaries in Australia compared to the UK were considerably higher – but there was one cost he remains shocked by even after three years living Down Under.

After ordering a refreshing pint beneath the Perth sunshine where he currently lives, he remarked: “This is the biggest difference in terms of pricing between the UK and Australia and that is that alcohol is just so much more expensive in Australia compared to the UK.

“There’s not that much to be honest, but alcohol is definitely one of them.”

Gesturing towards his drink, he added: “I’ve just bought a pint here and that cost me a lovely $16 which is about £8. And if you are looking at alcohol prices, £8 in the UK would be considered a very expensive pint of alcohol, you would only pay that in central London, maybe like a really fancy bar.”

Nevertheless, he revealed that paying £8 for a single pint in Australia was fairly typical, and whilst one or two drinks was manageable, an evening out could completely destroy your finances, particularly if you’re earning a UK salary.

He continued: “I will genuinely never get over Australia’s alcohol prices, and honestly, if you are a non drinker, you are going to save a lot of money than if you are a regular drinker here in Australia, no doubt about that.”

Luke, who previously lived in New Zealand, currently shares accommodation with his girlfriend, Jessica Amy, and they each pay approximately £100 weekly in rent.

Following his experiment, he worked out that he had spent £39.28 for the day, incorporating expenses such as accommodation and meals, and if his net monthly income was £2,500, that would provide him with a daily budget of £75, meaning he was comfortably within limits and could potentially save £1,000 monthly.

Consequently, he concluded that individuals could manage to live in Australia on a UK salary, though significant restrictions would be necessary.

When contrasting this with a typical Australian salary, he stated you would have £73 remaining from each day. This would also result in £2,200 surplus at month’s end, and examining it on an annual basis, he believes surviving on an Australian wage would provide an additional £12,000 in savings throughout the year.

Discussing the “massive difference” in how Britons and Australians are compensated for identical roles, Luke concluded: “I think the biggest thing is with the wage gap, it just allows you to save that much more or it just allows you to do that extra one or two activities that you might want to do.

“I think that’s the biggest thing, you can definitely survive living here just fine, but Australia’s wage just allows you that extra flexibility to be able to really relax and enjoy our life.”
