Simon Calder recommends wonderful destination perfect for pensioners | Travel News | Travel

Travel guru Simon Calder named Cascais, near Lisbon in Portugal, as one of his favourite holiday destinations. This picturesque town is especially attractive during the winter season, offering affordable flights from UK airports to Lisbon, and with average highs of 16C in February.

The town’s manageable size makes it particularly suitable for older travellers seeking a destination that’s easily explored on foot. Travel journalist and photographer Caroline said on her blog Packthesuitcases that Cascais “is a nice walkable size” and “you don’t need to worry about taxis and buses – everything in the town itself is easily reached on foot”. Getting to Cascais from Lisbon via train is also very easy.

Simon Calder praised the beautiful town on his travel podcast and said it’s one of his “favourite Portuguese locations”.

“Cascais is the port planted elegantly on the shoreline west of the capital, Lisbon, on what’s known as the Portuguese Riviera. It was settled in turn by Romans, Visigoths and Moors, and today the centre of Cascais is an intriguing combination of sun-worn houses, cafés, shops and smart hotels.”

According to travel experts at Globe Trove, Cascais is “an absolute gem that has stunning beaches, excellent food and plenty of history”.

“Is Cascais worth visiting when it comes to walkability? Yes. There are great footpaths and ramps in all parts of the city. Where there are no ramps you will find that there are elevators. Cascais is also a very small city so you can easily walk from end to end and back again.”

The town is also a great option if you want to avoid the crowds. “I found myself quite enjoying the pretty streets and I found a number of places where we were relatively alone. So is Cascais worth visiting? It is if you love a bit of solitude.”
