NYC Health Department’s anti-Israel working group: Letters

The Issue: The NYC Department of Health’s “Global Oppression and Public Health Working Group.”

I thought the Department of Health’s mission was the health and safety of New Yorkers (“Healthy dose of hate,” Feb. 5).

Since when did foreign policy issues, such as the war in Gaza, become a concern?

Would it be proper for the department to have a study group showing how MAGA has increased the health outcomes of New Yorkers? Of course not.

This is a prime example of how woke politics have taken hold of our bloated government.

The DOH’s “Global Oppression and Public Health Working Group” ought to relearn medicine’s prime maxim: “Do no harm,” because doing harm seems to be the group’s entire purpose.

This working group takes involved employees away from their jobs, wastes taxes and diminishes public trust in a critically important municipal function.

This is just one more example of the antisemitism increasingly infecting the city.

Mayor Mamdani is quickly transitioning the DOH into the New York City Department of Hate.

Rather than spending their time and resources fighting disease, staffers are helping spread the centuries-old plague of antisemitism.

The Mayor’s Office to Combat Antisemitism is merely a clever ruse intended to overshadow his goal of demonizing the State of Israel.

If DOH staffers are studying the accusation of Israeli genocide in Gaza, they should also read background material such as the 1988 Hamas charter, articles 6, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, 20, 22 and 32.

If they think New York City’s Health Department should spend the workday studying allegations, they must also read about Hamas’ genocidal Oct. 7, 2023 attack on the state of Israel in order to avoid being accused of bias.

Harriet Katz

Cohoes

It is purely antisemitic of New York City’s Health Department to divert valuable taxpayer resources to investigating the calumny of genocide in — as Article 80 of the UN Charter declares — the established “national home” of the Jewish people: Israel.

This is a Jew-hating diversion embraced by Mamdani that’s bleeding valuable taxpayer resources.

Richard Sherman

Margate, Fla.

The number one qualification needed to work for Mamdani’s administration is the ability to hate. Not just any old hate, but an extreme hatred for Israel and all Jews who feel a touch of love or caring for the only Jewish country.

We all knew this and yet here he is, spewing hate everyday.

The Issue: Sgt. Erik Duran’s manslaughter conviction for killing a suspect in a buy-and-bust operation.

The message to NYPD officers following Sgt. Erik Duran’s guilty verdict is very clear: Do not do your job (“Cop convicted,” Feb. 7).

If you do, then rest assured, politicians and the majority of New Yorkers will not support you. Your successful efforts to lower the crime rate and save lives are not appreciated by the majority, so do not put yourself at risk of legal ruin to try to help people who hate you.

Joseph J. Grassi

Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Forget the fact that Eric Duprey was attempting to escape arrest for selling narcotics and consider the imminent threat to public safety he posed by recklessly operating a motor scooter on the sidewalk. That alone was enough reasoning for Duran to do what he did.

He should be commended for his actions, but instead is facing up to 15 years in prison.
