Suits is having a massive resurgence on Netflix and one industry analyst explains why. Originally running on the USA Network from 2011 to 2019, the legal drama is about New York’s best closer, Harvey Specter as he hires a fake but highly capable lawyer, Mike Ross as his new associate. While Suits only experienced middling success during its initial time on the air, it has been consistently topping charts recently, posting a total of 3.1 billion minutes streamed from Netflix and Peacock between June 26 to July 2. Given this, there’s curiosity as to why exactly the show has found second life four years since it wrapped up.
In a new interview with Washington Post, industry strategist for Parrot Analytics, Brandon Katz breaks down the possible reasons for its resurgence after Suits ended with season 9. He mentions a few reasons, including increased interest in the show as Meghan Markle’s final acting gig before marrying Prince Harry. Read his full quote below:
“It’s clear there is additional value to be wrung from certain titles in the post-finale windows, The genres that drew large audiences on broadcast TV once upon a time (procedurals and sitcoms) can and are still popular on streaming.”
Can Suits Season 10 Happen After Its Newfound Success
On the heels of the show finding new life on Netflix, non-writing producer Gene Klein addresses the possibility of a Suits revival. He admits that between the series’ impressive streaming number and Hollywood’s penchant for revisiting old IPs, he is expecting that the idea will be properly discussed sometime in the future. However, he also makes sure to mention that there are currently no concrete plans to do this. Realistically, the biggest issue for a Suits revival is bringing everyone on board. Klein shares that it wasn’t easy to keep as many cast members until the end of the show’s run, and it’s safe to say that it will be trickier to recruit them all back for the proposed project.
Narratively, the Suits revival has a few options. Despite the show’s satisfying ending where Harvey and Donna decide to leave New York and leave the firm to Louis, there are several lingering plots that the potential endeavor can tackle. It could show how Louis has been handling the firm since he became its top honcho. The project can also follow Harvey and Donna as they join Mike and Rachel to start a new life in Seattle. Finally, the Suits revival can simply pick up where Gina Torres’ Pearson spin-off left Jessica in Chicago. Whatever the case may be, old fans of the series will be more than happy just to see the old gang back together.
Suits wasn’t a critical darling when it ran on USA Network. In fact, it was always criticized for its unrealistic depiction of what corporate law life is. Despite that, there’s no denying that the series is wildly entertaining. The banters among the cast members are great, which is likely another factor to its current success on Netflix.
