Martin Scorsese‘s upcoming horror thriller will not only feature Leonardo DiCaprio as one of its leads but also serve as the perfect follow-up to his 16-year-old masterpiece.
Every time Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio join forces for a movie project, it is hard not to believe that they will deliver something incredible and potentially Oscar-worthy. After Killers of the Flower Moon, the two powerhouses are set to team up again in Scorsese’s upcoming movie, which is interestingly based on a book.
A closer look at the movie’s genre and story elements suggests that it will be perfect for audiences who enjoyed one of Scorsese and DiCaprio’s previous collaborations.
Martin Scorsese’s What Happens At Night Feels Like The Perfect Shutter Island Followup
Martin Scoresese’s upcoming movie, What Happens At Night, is based on Peter Cameron’s novel of the same name. So far, the movie’s cast includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Mads Mikkelsen, and Patricia Clarkson. As the original book suggests, the movie will be a psychological horror thriller that focuses on an American couple that visits a European town to adopt a child.
However, soon after they check into a strange hotel, they encounter a few mysterious characters, and their reality begins to blur.
With Leonardo DiCaprio as its lead and psychological horror undertones, What Happens At Night seems reminiscent of Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island in more ways than one. Even the movie’s confined hotel setting in a snowy town reminds one of the island from Shutter Island. The fact that the couple in What Happens at Night gradually loses their grip on reality also seems like a recurring theme from the 2010 film.
While only time will tell how Scorsese will visually capture the book on the screen, it is hard not to envision it as another Shutter Island-esque metaphysical fever dream.
What Happens At Night Will Incline More Towards Horror Than Shutter Island
Shutter Island has its unsettling moments, but it comes off more as a typical psychological thriller with well-timed twists and brilliant performances. What Happens At Night, on the other hand, will seemingly incline more towards the horror genre by portraying its central setting as a supernatural vacuum.
Since most details surrounding the new Martin Scorsese movie are still under wraps, it is hard to foresee how the director will adapt the original book. Based on the original story, however, it seems like What Happens at Night will have more horror elements than both Cape Fear and Shutter Island. This could potentially make it the most “horror” genre movie Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese have ever done.
