There’s Still Time To Binge Starz’s Criminally Underrated Historical Fantasy Before Its Epic Final Season

Before Starz ends its epic run, there’s still time to catch up on a criminally underrated historical fantasy series with its own cult following. With countless ways to consume media nowadays, there’s no scarcity of TV shows to watch. Whether series that are part of the 2025-2026 TV cycle on traditional broadcasters or offerings on streaming, there is something for every demographic and preference.

However, lovers of gritty historical shows with a sprinkling of time travel and an all-consuming romance might have a trickier time finding something that nails all three storytelling aspects. After all, these genres can exist on their own separately, and doing them risks making one show cluttered and crammed. That said, fans of Starz’s Outlander will know how brilliantly it has been juggling all those factors. Despite that, unfortunately, it’s still widely under-watched compared to other fantasy shows on more prominent platforms.

Based on Diana Gabaldon’s popular novel series of the same name, Outlander largely stays faithful to the source material while also changing enough details to keep even those who have read the books intrigued. Premiering in 2014, the show has gradually built its loyal fan-base, with its availability on streaming helping it boost its brand. Still, Outlander doesn’t get the credit that other historical or fantasy shows get.

As it prepares to debut Outlander season 8, those who are looking for an epic that is both well-made in terms of production value and narrative should check out the series. Brilliantly led by Sam Heughan as Jamie Fraser and Catriona Balfe as Claire Fraser, the Starz series has over 90 episodes across all seven seasons. Considering the show’s storytelling pace and how it effectively demonstrates the passage of time, it should be an easy binge before it finishes rolling out its final 10 episodes starting on March 6.

What To Expect From Outlander Season 8

As one of the better executed best book-to-TV shows, Outlander has left some lingering storylines to address when it comes back without a clear resolution from Gabaldon’s books. Instead of a novel-to-season adaptation, Starz opted to spice things up by not following the pace of the source material when it came to segmenting its overall narrative.

For example, the Outlander season 7 finale pulled from Written in My Own Heart’s Blood, with its final year tackling events from Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone and maybe even the still-unreleased 10th installment. Beyond the books, however, there are storylines that have been set up on the show that need to be addressed. Jamie’s mysterious time-travelling ghost needs to be explained, and while this was part of Gabaldon’s original narrative, it’s unlikely that the Starz series will follow its print resolution.

Tobias Menzies’ return as Frank Randall is another exciting plot in Outlander season 8. As seen in the trailer for the show’s final run, Claire’s contemporary husband talks about Jamie’s eventual demise. This adds another complication to the already daunting future that the couple is facing after returning to Fraser’s Ridge only to be welcomed by the war that they have been trying to escape from.
