LA Mayor Race Polling Shows Spencer Pratt as Karen Bass’ Main Rival

A reality TV alum may pose the biggest threat to Karen Bass in her quest to earn a second term as Mayor of Los Angeles. Spencer Pratt announced his candidacy for the city’s top job in early January, running as an independent despite his past public support for Republicans.

Famous for shows like The Hills, the LA-born celebrity is apparently gaining popularity with voters in the area. Karen has been on the job since 2022, succeeding Eric Garcetti. She was officially sworn in by former US Vice President Kamala Harris upcoming winning the top job in LA.

Another former celebrity could be primed for a big political upset in California. Spencer’s campaign is apparently starting to gain some traction. On Thursday, the reality star’s campaign advisor, Douglas Herman, emailed TMZ suggesting Spencer would be the top contender to take Karen’s job. The message included both endorsers and supporters. According to their internal pollster, Binder Research, Spencer is currently in a position to make the November runoff election.

The letter also states that another mayoral candidate, Nithya Raman, is struggling regarding “name awareness, unified base or favorable appeal.” The councillor was originally described as a leading contender for the job. Douglas does not believe that she is anywhere near the level of popularity of Zohran Mamdani, who was elected Mayor of New York City last year.

Shortly after declaring himself a candidate, Spencer said he never wanted “to be in politics.” He slammed local politicians for failing, in his opinion, to step up following the devastating fires in the region in early 2025.

Spencer may be popular amongst some voters, but getting his own family’s support is apparently a chore. His own sister, Stephanie, blasted his candidacy, saying, “A vote for him is a vote for stupidity.”

Karen is the second Black person to be elected LA Mayor after Tom Bradley. The first election for the job will take place on June 3. If no candidate receives a majority of the votes, a runoff will be held on November 3.
