Bridgerton, Netflix’s steamy Regency-era romance series, is still doing a victory lap after airing its fourth season, which saw the bohemian Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) find love with a resourceful maid named Sophie Baek (Yerin Ha). Half a decade down the line, the show is as popular as ever. Even the spin-off series Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story was a hit when it landed on Netflix in 2023. When it comes to Bridgerton, Rhimes and her team seem able to do no wrong.
Queen Charlotte dug deeper into the life of the titular character, played by Golda Rosheuvel in the current timeline and by India Amarteifio as a younger woman. There’s been no solid word about a second season of that show, but Rhimes has talked about making spin-offs about other characters. “I think Violet is fascinating,” Rhimes said back in 2023. “And there’s a story to be told there,”
Rhimes returned to that thought during a visit to Craig Melvin’s Glass Half Full podcast, where she said that there will “definitely” be more Bridgerton spin-offs in the future. “That’s an area that we’re excited about and know that that could be really rich and really mined well,” Rhimes said. “I’ve always said that I thought that if we were gonna do something like that, Violet would be a great person to tell the story about, the Bridgerton mom.”
Nothing’s certain yet, but the evidence is starting to pile up that Violet (Ruth Gemmell) will indeed be the next Bridgerton character to get their own side story.
Violet is the mother of the eight Bridgerton siblings, and spent the first three seasons helping them find happy relationships. In season 4 she finally found a romance of her own with Lord Anderson (Daniel Francis), but in the end Violet chose to prioritize her independence and the pair split up.
A theoretical spin-off about Violet could be structured similarly to Queen Charlotte, with one plotline set in the present timeline as Violet enjoys her independence or perhaps finds a new suitor; and another set in the past, where we see how a young Violet got together with Edmund Bridgerton, the father of the Bridgerton children. Edmund, who was played by actor Rupert Evans in flashbacks in season 2, died some 10 years before the events of the main series.
‘Bridgerton’ Showrunner Confirms Subjects of Seasons 5 and 6
We finally know which Bridgertons will find love after brother Benedict.
Author Julia Quinn, who wrote the Bridgerton novels on which the show is based, also wrote a novella about Violet called “Violet in Bloom,” which was published in her 2013 book The Bridgertons: Happily Ever After. “Violet In Bloom” is all about Violet and Edmund’s early lives, so that could give Shonda Rhimes and her team a place to start.
But before that happens, there are more seasons of the original show to look forward to. Netflix has already confirmed seasons 5 and 6 of Bridgerton are on the way, with season 5 potentially coming out as early as 2027. Clearly, Netflix’s sweeping period drama still has a lot of life left in it.
