Grey’s Anatomy, one of the longest running shows on the ABC network, has had an interesting rotating cast precisely because of how long the series has endured over the past couple of decades. In order to maintain the story and multiple seasons, series regulars have come and gone throughout the years while still having the same compelling drama that has made the show so long-lasting. Now, as the finale for the latest season approaches, there will be two more cast members bowing out. Moreover, these two actors who will be leaving have been longtime veterans of the series, which will make their exits feel even more impactful.
Per Variety, it has been announced that Kim Raver and Kevin McKidd, who play the characters Teddy and Owen, respectively, will be leaving in the Season 22 finale of Grey’s Anatomy, which is set to air on May 7. The two characters are ex-Army majors who had met in Baghdad during the Iraq war. The couple had been pulled back and forth away from each other through the many storylines that they’ve been involved in, though the two had finally gotten married in Season 18 of the series. The two actors have been on the show for several years now, making their departure bittersweet.
McKidd had made his Grey’s Anatomy debut in Season 5, with Raver subsequently joining the series the next season in a recurring role before becoming a series regular later that season. However, two seasons later, Raver would leave the show at the end of Season 8. The actor wouldn’t return to the medical drama until Season 14 in a guest role capacity, before fully coming back to the hospital in Season 15. This time around, the departure of both characters is stated to be due to a creative decision, with the chance that they could return in the future.
Creator Sonda Rhimes provided a brief statement about Teddy and Owen leaving, saying that “It is both bittersweet and joyful to give this couple the happy ending their story deserves.” McKidd made a statement of his own, saying how the show has been a “huge chapter” in his life, and how “deeply grateful” he is to have had a chance to play the character. Raver added that playing Teddy Altman will “always hold a dear and special place” in her heart. The sixteen years of work on the show was impactful to both actors, and it will be interesting to see where they go from here.
Rhimes’ full statement praises both actors, saying that “Kevin and Kim bring extraordinary talent, nuance and heart to their roles as Owen and Teddy. Their contributions leave an indelible mark on Grey’s Anatomy, both in front of and behind the camera. I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with them both and to see them shine.” While their time on Grey’s Anatomy has come to an end, the series will still be going strong, with a Season 23 renewal already confirmed for the Fall 2026 television slate.
