Ryan Reynolds & Hugh Jackman Rumored for Roles in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

To say the Avengers: Doomsday cast is massive would be a major understatement, as it boasts dozens of the biggest names in comic book movie history. With Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom driving the action, the film sees the most notable names from MCU history and more than a handful of legacy stars from non-MCU Marvel movies joining forces to stop the multiverse from collapsing on itself. Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, the masterminds behind four of the MCU’s best Infinity Saga movies, this sequel is set to fundamentally change the franchise, leading to a potential full-blown reboot in 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars.

Thus far, Doomsday has over 30 stars confirmed for roles of varying sizes, and more characters are expected to join them as surprises when the film is released at the end of the year. The previously mentioned legacy stars are best known for their roles as mutants in 20th Century Fox’s X-Men saga, giving fans a version of the iconic team from the comics they’ve wanted to see assembled for decades. While more heroes may join them later in the promotional tour, a new rumor points to the addition of two who should send anticipation through the roof.

According to insider Daniel Richtman, Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds have roles in Avengers: Doomsday as Deadpool and Wolverine. As Doomsday heads into its reshoot schedule, Richtman noted that Jackman and Reynolds “will film at least one scene,” but no other details were revealed about how big their roles will be or what they will film. Should they be cast in this movie, it would mark their second MCU credits after debuting in 2024’s Deadpool and Wolverine, the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time.

While both Reynolds and Jackman have denied being cast in Doomsday, rumors persist. Another rumor teased an opening moment with these two in which their universe is destroyed, although plot details are still being kept heavily guarded until more promotional material is released.

Their inclusion would make plenty of sense, as they could unite with the team of X-Men who are already part of Doomsday‘s extensive cast. Wolverine is known for his close (if a bit testy) relationships with characters like Professor X and Cyclops, and he and Wolverine are two of only a few characters currently aware of the scale of the multiverse.

While it’s unclear how long Doomsday reshoots will last, the Russo brothers have time to add any new characters or storylines they need to complete its massive story. Downey is expected to have the movie’s main plot line as Doctor Doom, similarly to the way Josh Brolin anchored the action as Thanos in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War. While there will still be plenty of screentime to divvy out among the heroes, some will be more front and center than others. If Deadpool and Wolverine show up, it’ll only add that much more star power to what could be the biggest franchise movie in history.

Avengers: Doomsday will debut in theaters on Dec. 18, 2026.
