‘The Pitt’ Season 3’s Dr. Mohan Exit Could Make or Break the HBO Max Series

In a perfect world, the best characters would stay on a TV show for the entire run, but it doesn’t look like that will happen on the beloved HBO medical drama The Pitt. Following the news that Dr. Samira Mohan (Supriya Ganesh) is leaving The Pitt after Season 2, we wonder what the next season will look like, and we already miss one of the wisest and most talented doctors.

Because Mohan has been on The Pitt since the first episode, fans likely thought she would be here for the entire series, or at least one more season. Her character arc has been one of the most moving since it examines what it’s like to have huge dreams and believe in yourself while working in an unsettling and fast-paced industry. Now that we know that we’ll only see Mohan for two more episodes, we have to wonder what this means for the future of the series.

‘The Pitt’ Season 3’s Update Proves That Some Characters Will Leave, For Better or Worse

HBO Max

While we don’t want to see any of our favorite doctors leave The Pitt, it makes sense that not every cast member can stay for the entire run. Knowing that any of these beloved characters might leave at any moment raises the stakes of the series and makes every moment count. On the one hand, this proves that The Pitt is different from other medical dramas. Fans expect to see most of the same doctors, interns, and medical students season after season. Yes, Grey’s Anatomy has lost more than a few characters over its lengthy run, and several characters have died tragically or moved away. But for the most part, we’ve at least been able to watch the same people for a few seasons, which means that we’ve gotten to know them well.

So, it’s definitely realistic for The Pitt to let go of some characters along the way. Since Dr. Mohan and other young characters are figuring out their place in the world, it’s logical that they would make tough career decisions and move to a different specialty, start working in another area of the hospital, or accept a job at another hospital. Since we love The Pitt because of how natural and authentic it feels, it’s hard to complain about this. It would be worse if the show had random and illogical reasons to keep Mohan and the others around.

However, it’s also possible to view Dr. Mohan’s exit after The Pitt Season 2 as a problem. It suggests that more characters could move on in the future, which could be an issue. If a character wasn’t given enough screen time in a single season and then doesn’t return, that would be disappointing. Alternatively, if we learned that a character like Dana Evans (Katherine LaNasa) was leaving, we could feel satisfied that she’s had a good run. She’s had a moving arc as a caring mentor who has also wondered about her own career future. (Of course, losing Dana would be awful, so let’s not put that thought out into the universe.)

Since Mohan is such a smart character, it’s a shame not to see more of her. While we can hope that The Pitt Season 2 finale will let us know where Mohan is headed, and spotlight her enough to make for a satisfying conclusion, there’s now a lot riding on that one episode. As The Pitt focuses on characters rather than big narrative swings or massive plot twists, Mohan’s last scene might be a quiet one. Still, one of the best characters deserves a great send-off.

Mohan is a bright spot in a second season that, at times, has been uneven and not quite as excellent as the first season. Her anxiety storyline is beautiful, relatable, and important. It sends the message that it’s okay to struggle, even if someone is an accomplished doctor whom everyone thinks is perfect and has it all together. Knowing that she’s leaving makes us think about the legacy that she will leave at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. Hopefully, she has inspired her coworkers to admit when they’re not all right and to ask for help and support. It will be interesting to see how The Pitt Season 3 will explore the topic of mental health, which has been a big focus since the first episode. While Dr. Robby’s arc has been about his own mental health journey, Mohan’s added another layer.

Could More Characters Leave Before ‘The Pitt’ Season 3?

Now that we know that Dr. Mohan is leaving The Pitt, it also seems possible that some others could make big career changes and leave. After all, both Mohan and Victoria Javadi (Shabana Azeez) have been wondering about their futures.

In March 2026, Taylor Deardon talked about what storyline she would like Dr. Mel King to have next season. Based on her comments, it sounds like, at least for now, she expects to come back. She told Us Weekly:

“Without revealing too much, hopefully there’s more of a friendship for Mel that develops in season 2. And then hopefully we see what a friendship with Mel looks like in season 3. That’s what I’m always going for — friends for Mel.”

At the time of this writing, it’s unclear which other cast members are returning. However, there is one piece of good news: as reported by Variety, Ayesha Harris is now a regular cast member, which suggests that Dr. Parker Ellis, who works the night shift, will play a bigger role in the story. Thanks to the strong writing and amazing acting on the series, we can at least rest assured that even if some beloved characters leave, the others are interesting enough to keep us invested.

There’s only one thing left to do: tune into the last two episodes of The Pitt Season 2 and cross our fingers that everyone will be okay, that Dr. Mohan gets a great ending, and that we find out what happened to the baby, too.
