Netflix’s ‘The Boroughs’ Teaser Trailer Reveals New Sci-Fi Series From ‘Stranger Things’ Creators

The Duffer Brothers may have finally finished their run on Stranger Things just last year, but that doesn’t mean they’re slowing down in bringing new projects to life. The duo is now executive producing several projects for Netflix, helping other creators bring their visions for new (and sometimes terrifying) stories to life. Most recently, the horror series Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen saw an impressive Rotten Tomatoes debut, with the show also being executive produced by the Duffer brothers. Now, their next collaborative effort, The Boroughs, has released its first teaser trailer online.

When looking at the premise of The Boroughs, it’s easy to see why the project is executive produced by the Duffer Brothers. Taking place in a retirement community in the New Mexico desert, it focuses on a group of “misfits” who are forced to contend with a mysterious entity. Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, who previously created the Netflix original series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, are showrunners of the upcoming series, which has a supernatural and science fiction aesthetic. The duo talked to Tudum about working with the Duffers, having this to say about the project:

“From the beginning, we knew we wanted The Boroughs to feel equal parts scary, mysterious, exciting and emotional. The challenge was to create a world that could hold all of these different tones at once. Which is why it was so fun to work with the Duffer Brothers — the masters of balancing heart and horror.”

Featuring an impressive cast that has the likes of Alfred Molina (Spider-Man: No Way Home), Geena Davis (Thelma and Louise), Alfre Woodard (Clemency), Denis O’Hare (American Horror Story), Clarke Peters (The Wire), Bill Pullman (Independence Day) and many more, The Boroughs has the talent to back up its ambitious story. The first teaser trailer is already filled with the same intrigue and wonder that the first season of Stranger Things had brought, which is exactly what made the Duffer Brothers so confident in Addiss and Matthews as showrunners and also the stacked cast, as they told Tudum:

“They bring the perfect balance of heart and horror to our story. We can’t wait for audiences around the world to unlock the dark mystery buried beneath the sunny facade of The Boroughs. While the heroes in The Boroughs have a few more years on them than the kids from Stranger Things, they are a similarly lovable bunch of misfits, and we can’t wait for you to join them on an adventure that is at turns scary, funny, and deeply touching.”

Made under the Upside Down Pictures Production Banner with Ben Taylor (Sex Education) also attached as executive producer, The Boroughs is set to release all of its episodes on Netflix on May 21. While Stranger Things may be over, its influence on the streaming platform’s original series is still palpable, as the Duffers help to shepherd new and exciting concepts onto the small screen that helped make their first series so successful to begin with.
