‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ Trailer Revealed After CinemaCon Presentation

Following the presentation of Godzilla Minus Zero at Cinema Con this year, the first teaser trailer has been released online. The Godzilla franchise has seen a revitalization over the past decade, in both the North American and Japanese film markets. While the Godzilla Final Wars film led to a period of no Godzilla films being produced, Legendary and Toho eventually partnered up for a North American Reboot in 2014 that led to the Monsterverse as we know it. Then, Toho themselves would reboot their franchise with 2016’s Shin Godzilla, followed in 2023 with yet another iteration in the form of Godzilla Minus One.

While Shin Godzilla had its fair share of praise for its scathing social commentary and imaginative (and sometimes grotesque) designs and evolution of the titular monster, it was Minus One that would propel Godzilla back into the spotlight. The Post-World War II period piece balanced a dark tone with a surprising amount of hope and heart, receiving rave reviews and even an Academy Award for its impressive visual effects. The positive reception eventually led to the announcement of a sequel, titled Godzilla Minus Zero, with Takashi Yamazaki returning as director. Now, fans can finally watch the first official trailer online.

The film marks many firsts for a Godzilla movie, with one of the most exciting being that it is the first Japanese movie made for IMAX, with director Takashi Yamazaki using IMAX cameras. Several shots in the trailer promise a thrilling and intense new film, teasing a change of location as well as a two-year time jump. With a shot of the Statue of Liberty in the trailer, Godzilla Minus Zero will be moving the action from Japan to the United States, with the titular monster making his way to New York. Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe, the stars of Minus One, will be returning for this film as well. Following the couple’s somewhat happy ending at the end of the first film, there was still an ominous close-up of the neck of Hamabe’s character, implying that she may have been infected by Godzilla’s atomic blast in Minus One.

With a release date of Nov. 6, 2026, the next couple of years are set to be big for the King of the Monsters. Multiple projects centered around the character are being (or have been) released this year, such as the second season of the Apple TV series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, which premiered in February. Moreover, next March will see the release of Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, another entry in Legendary’s Monsterverse, which will more than likely feature a new Kaiju threat for the duo to face.

Judging by the teaser trailer, Godzilla Minus Zero is getting a premium format release in IMAX in the United States. With the hype surrounding the film and the emphasis on the premium format in its CinemaCon presentation, it would be unsurprising if the film manages to officially secure a healthy amount of IMAX screens for its November release. There is still so much about the plot that is unknown at this point, but it’s still exciting to see the iconic Kaiju wreak havoc on an entirely new city.
