I looked for cheapest holiday destinations for the May Bank Holiday weekend – results | Travel News | Travel

If you’re looking to escape Britain for the end of May Bank Holiday weekend, there are plenty of options with flights for less than £150. If you’re able to take off Thursday or Tuesday as well, you’ll probably be able to save even more on flights, but for this experiment I’ve looked at flights leaving on Saturday, May 27 and getting back on Monday, May 29 so there’s no need to take an extra day off work. I’ve also only included direct flights to maximise on holiday time.

Ireland

The Emerald Isle is one of the UK’s closest neighbours and it makes sense it’s one of the cheapest destinations to visit this Bank Holiday. I found return flights to Shannon for £40 from London and flights to Cork for under £40 from Manchester.

A beautiful spot on the west coast of Ireland, Shannon is packed with ancient sites and outstanding natural beauty. Tourists can also visit the breathtaking Cliffs of Moher, which are just a 50-minute drive from Shannon.

Cork is Ireland’s second largest city and has a reputation as the country’s foodie hotspot. Tourists will want to pick up some snacks at the city’s English Market.

Don’t miss the city’s Butter Museum, which takes visitors on a journey through the history of butter making.

Denmark

While some Britons will be looking to fly south this spring, they could pick up a better bargain travelling to Scandinavia. I found flights for under £70 to Billund from London and under £80 to Aarhus.

Billund is the ideal destination for a family holiday as the Danish town is the birthplace of Lego bricks. Lego fans won’t want to miss LEGOLAND or the nearby museum, LEGO House.

Aarhus is Denmark’s second largest city and tourists can learn more about Danish history at the open-air Old Town museum, Den Gamle By.

The ARos art museum is another of the city’s top attractions. Head up to the rooftop to enjoy a unique rainbow panorama of the Danish city.

Germany

I found flights to Frankfurt for under £150 return from London. Situated on the river Main, Frankfurt isn’t just a financial hub.

The city is the birthplace of famous writer Johann Woflgang von Goethe, and tourists can learn more about his life at the Goethe House Museum.

Frankfurt’s reconstructed Old Town is the perfect place to grab a coffee or sample the quintessential German schnitzel.

Tourists can also easily reach the Rhine Valley from Frankfurt and visit pretty Heidelberg on a day trip.

Netherlands

Amsterdam was recently named as Europe’s most expensive city break for Britons but another Dutch city is far more of a bargain. I found return flights for under £105 from London to Eindhoven.

The southern Netherlands city is the ideal destination for petrolheads, with its top-rated DAF Museum.

The Netherlands is extremely well-connected and tourists can also explore Utrecht, Amsterdam or Mastricht in under an hour and a half.

Maastricht is one of the Netherland’s oldest cities and is also considered to be one of the country’s most beautiful.

‌As the majority of these cheap flights are from London, I also had a look at the cheapest spots for tourists travelling from the UK’s other major airports.

Britons travelling from Bristol Airport can pick up return flights to Dublin for under £75 while travellers from Leeds Bradford also have Ireland as the cheapest option.

Ireland is also the cheapest destination for tourists flying from Liverpool with Paris the second cheapest option.

The Emerald Isle is also the cheapest destination for tourists travelling from Edinburgh and Glasgow.

All flight prices are correct at the time of writing and found on Skyscanner.
