An Underrated Comedy Hit Of The 2010s Resurfaces On HBO Max

It doesn’t get talked about enough but the 2010s were home to an impressive slate of tremendous comedy movies. Booksmart, What We Do in the Shadows, Bridesmaids, The Big Sick, Crazy Rich Asians, The Nice Guys, The Edge of Seventeen, and so many others stand out.

Those were all hailed by critics, even if the box office didn’t totally match. Then, there are the movies that were big hits, yet have been forgotten for whatever reason over the years since they arrived. Among those is Game Night, which was released in 2018 and was a solid commercial success.

Game Night grossed over $100 million on a budget of around $37 million, making it something of a hit. Despite those strong numbers, it seems like nobody brings it up when discussing the best comedy films from the era. That’s a shame because it deserves to be mentioned in that conversation.

The film has everything you could want from a comedy. It features a ridiculously talented cast, a wacky premise with great plot twists, and some of the biggest laughs of the decade. Thankfully, Game Night has recently come to HBO Max and has shot up the charts, meaning more people are seeing and appreciating it.

Game Night Is One Of The Best Comedies Of The 2010s

No matter which way you look at it, Game Night has to be considered one of the best comedy movies of the 2010s. For starters, it has one of the most creative and fun premises of any film in the genre, which sets the stage for some absurd, yet hilarious shenanigans.

The film centers on a group of friends who gather for a game night, which is meant to be a role-playing mystery game. However, the host gets kidnapped for real and the rest of the gang is in over their heads as they try to rescue him, getting caught up in some wild scenarios.

Game Night was a hit with critics, scoring an 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. That’s not a number that many comedies, especially with this kind of setup, reach. The film was also a box office success, evidenced by the aforementioned intake of over $100 million. Again, there aren’t a ton of comedies that can match that.

Game Night Isn’t Often Mentioned Among The Decade’s Top Comedies

Max (Jason Bateman) and Annie (Rachel McAdams) lie on the road in Game Night

Despite all those reasons, Game Night is still not brought up by too many when they discuss the best comedies of the 2010s. Even films that weren’t nearly as well-received by critics get mentioned more often than Game Night, which is disappointing.

People tend to discuss the likes of Ted, Grown Ups, We’re the Millers, and Friends with Benefits more, and while those are good movies, it’s hard to say they’re better than Game Night.

Having the film trending on HBO Max should help. People are likely seeing the incredible cast of Jason Bateman, Rachel McAdams, Kyle Chandler, Lamorne Morris, Jesse Plemons, Kylie Bunbury, and more, and realizing just how much talent is involved. That’s eye-catching.

Rumors Have Swirled About A Game Night Sequel

Lamorne Morris in Game Night

The possibility of expanding this world with a sequel has been brought up before, yet it hasn’t always been good news. Directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley like that they left the audience wanting more, especially since they admit it could be hard to top themselves.

Meanwhile, Jesse Plemons has stated that he’d sign back on for a sequel. The actor delivered the film’s most memorable and meme-worthy lines, “How can that be profitable for Frito-Lay?” Emmy winner Lamorne Morris also expressed interest in returning because it was so fun, and the movie set itself up for a sequel.

The chances of a Game Night sequel could go up if the film continues to find more success on HBO Max, where it currently sits among the platform’s top 10.
