Marvel Finally Has Its Own Flash (Who Makes Quicksilver Look Slow)

Spoilers for Children of the Vault #1!

Marvel has introduced its newest speedster, Prisa-38, one of the ultra-evolved Children of the Vault, and she immediately proved herself to be one of the fastest beings on the planet. Following the Mutant Massacre at the Hellfire Gala, the Children have emerged seeking to prove that they are the answer to the world’s calamities, humanity’s saviors.

Children of the Vault #1 – by Deniz Camp, Luca Maresca, and Carlos Lopez – depicts a new generation of Children of the Vault emerging. After repeatedly trying to wipe out mutants, they were trapped, stuck dreaming of a world that didn’t exist. Now, with mutantkind devestated at the hands of anti-mutant organization Orchis, the Children, calling themselves the Children of Tomorrow, look to secure their place in the world.

Prisa-38’s Speed Furthers the Children of the Vault’s Agenda

Prisa-38 is just beginning to stretch her muscles, but she’s already joined an elite group of Marvel speedsters. In Children of the Vault #1, she’s described as being “already moving, already everywhere” as a massive earthquake strikes in Turkey. Prisa is depicted as quick enough to evacuate tens of thousands of people, “one by one.” That means she’s moving at something close to light speed, making her faster than Marvel’s speediest heroes. Marvel doesn’t have a street-level hero that matches DC’s Flash in terms of speed, though cosmic-level beings like Silver Surfer do. Quicksilver, Marvel’s most famous runner, tops out at Mach-10.

Other Speedsters Can’t Keep Up

Another Marvel speedster, Quicksilver’s nephew Tommy Shepherd, otherwise known as Speed, comes in just under the speed of sound. The Beaubier twins, Aurora and Northstar, may theoretically reach the speed of light, or surpass it, according to Jean-Paul in X-Factor #7 by Leah Williams, David Baldeon, and Israel Silva. However, it is said that doing so would cause massive devastation, which makes Prisa-38’s feat even more impressive. She shows incredible speed and power without any negative effects. Not only is she shockingly fast, but she also has major control over her abilities. Prisa-38’s introduction in Children of the Vault #1 immediately positions her as the fastest being on Earth-616.

Having just emerged from forced slumber, Prisa has had little opportunity to showcase her power. If it comes to a contest of speed, there are few Marvel characters who can go toe-to-toe with her. The Children of the Vault strive to make the world theirs; anyone in their way is an enemy – especially the remaining X-Men. Prisa-38 makes the Children difficult to slow down, let alone stop. The group has a strategy that involves spreading their message through humanity, something Prisa-38’s heroics in Turkey aided. Prisa-38 is now one of the fastest beings in the Marvel Universe, and that will have unfortunate consequences for anyone trying to stop Marvel’s Children of the Vault.

Children of the Vault #1 is available now from Marvel Comics!
