While the MCU has given many of its Multiverse Saga characters multiple chances to shine in the last five years, one who has not gotten that same chance yet is Oscar Isaac as Moon Knight. The Star Wars and Marvel veteran first joined the world’s biggest movie/TV franchise as Marc Spector/Steven Knight/JaKe Lockley in his own six-episode Disney+ series in 2022, bringing the mythical character to life and showing his origin story alongside the Egyptian moon god, Khonshu. While that series ended on a shocking note, with Khonshu agreeing to let Marc and Steven out of their partnership, the hero’s future has been in limbo.
Moon Knight was never renewed for a second season, and Isaac has only made one other appearance in the MCU since that time, voicing the character in the first episode of the animated What If…? Season 3 in 2024. Outside of that, rumors have pointed to Marvel potentially developing a movie for the Midnight Sons from the comics, a team of darker supernatural-inspired heroes that usually includes Marc Spector on its roster. While plans for that movie have never officially been confirmed, Isaac shared a new update on where it may stand under Marvel Studios’s watch.
In an interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, MCU star Oscar Isaac provided an update on Marvel Studios’s Midnight Sons movie. Confirming that there was “an interesting talk” about the project, he explained how important it is to “take it really seriously, even though it’s a crazy comic book,” noting that the story deals with things that are “very real and challenging and difficult:”
“Yeah, there was an interesting talk about ‘Midnight Sons.’ I mean, again, ‘fragility’ is not the right word, but tonally, it’s really important, because we’re playing with real stuff. It’s expressing something very real and challenging and difficult. You gotta take it really seriously as well, even though it’s a crazy comic book, but that’s what it’s trying to do, it’s doing both of those things.
Horowitz then brought up the idea of Oscar-nominee Ryan Gosling playing Ghost Rider, which both he and Gosling have publicly expressed hope to happen. Isaac seemed to be on board with the idea, saying, “Yeah! Make it happen, fellas. I mean, it’s a no-brainer.'”
Gosling has spoken for years about the idea of bringing Johnny Blaze to life in the MCU, which would be the first live-action story for that version of the hero since 2011’s Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. Already working with Disney on Star Wars: Starfighter, Gosling seems to be a great fit for a character like Ghost Rider, which could allow him to explore a darker role and dive into the legacy of one of Marvel’s most popular antiheroes.
As for the Midnight Sons, reports have teased their imminent arrival in the MCU for the last couple of years. This would likely unite a roster with characters like Doctor Strange, Moon Knight, Wong, Blade, and more, although not all of them have been introduced in the MCU yet. Isaac’s Moon Knight would almost certainly be a part of this movie, and should Gosling come on board as Ghost Rider, it would only raise anticipation that much further for the film’s development.
For the time being, the Midnight Sons movie appears to only be in the early stages of development, and it likely will not be ready until sometime during Phase 7. However, presuming development goes smoothly, Isaac and the rest of the hypothetical Midnight Sons roster have a chance to make some noise and give the MCU another thrilling team to celebrate on the big screen.
