Man found shot, hidden in trunk of sedan during traffic stop in San Marino

A traffic stop early Tuesday morning led to a grisly discovery when San Marino police opened the trunk of a Ford sedan and found a man who had been shot multiple times, police said.

The driver of the car fled on foot, and a second man, seated in the front passenger’s seat, was detained by officers. Now San Marino police and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department are trying to piece together what happened and what led to the deadly shooting.

At 2:34 a.m., San Marino police pulled over a gray older-model Ford sedan in the 1900 block of Robles Avenue, a residential neighborhood, according to a statement released by the Sheriff’s Department, whose homicide investigators are assisting in the investigation.

As the officer stepped out of the patrol car, the driver of the car opened his door and started running east, according to the statement. He was described as an adult male, about 5 feet, 6 inches tall with a dark complexion.

The stop prompted a search around the area for the driver, but police were unable to find him, sheriff’s officials said. The name of the passenger who was detained was not released.

The passenger was identified only as a male and a person of interest in the investigation.

Officers opened the trunk of the car and found a man who appeared to be suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was treated at the scene and taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police closed Los Robles Avenue between Monterey Road and Wilson Avenue because of the investigation.

Images from KTLA-TV showed police in the area searching a gray vehicle, which was parked at a red curb. Video from the area showed the rear passenger’s side door of the four-door sedan, as well as the trunk, opened. Several items appeared to be strewn about on the car’s hood and the sidewalk.
