Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Children of the Vault #1
As one of the most tactically minded X-Men, Cyclops’ time-traveling soldier son, Cable, is one of the teams most dangerous members. With access to hi-tech weaponry and decades of experience fighting wars few humans could fathom, Nathan Summers is a warrior without equal – and a newly revealed ability reinforces that the man called Cable is definitely his father’s son.
Children of the Vault #1 – by Deniz Camp, Luca Maresca, and Carlos Lopez – finds Cable in the clutches of Orchis after the tragic events that befell the X-Men during the Hellfire Gala. Nathan mediates through his captors’ torture as the narration states, “They’d caught him sleeping. Not literally, of course. He’d stopped sleeping years ago.”
Cable Doesn’t Have Time To Sleep
Surprising a man with knowledge of the future is pretty hard to do, but the notable revelation from Cable’s captivity in Children of the Vault #1 is that he has apparently done away with a need to sleep – freeing up plenty of time for him to plan ahead. Coming from a war-torn future as the sworn enemy of the former villain Apocalypse, Nathan Summers has spent his entire life mapping out every potential threat and scenario that he could come across. This lifetime of battle has turned Nathan not only into a master tactician, but also one of the most strategically sound minds of the X-Men, much like Cyclops.
Nathan Summers Just Has To One Up His Dad
Cable’s skills have been honed by an entire life spent planning to beat a seemingly unbeatable foe. His sense of strategy is so strong that he not only trained the New Mutants and X-Force, but he was also once able to defeat even the Avengers. Like his son, X-Men leader Cyclops’ tactical skills are some of the strongest in the Marvel Universe. If it were somehow possible for Scott Summers to do away with the need for sleep, so that he could always be on alert to protect his fellow mutants, it is more than likely that he would take the opportunity.
Whether it is Cable’s future technology that has allowed him to sidestep sleeping, or a side effect of his sizable psionic abilities, or even his techno-organic virus, the idea that Nathan is always on alert and one step ahead would make Cyclops proud. Cable is one of the X-Men’s most dangerous members, thanks in no small part to his tactical genius. Without the need to sleep, Nathan Summers has all the more time to plan his own personal war against the enemies of mutantkind. Whether his father Cyclops can follow in his footsteps and stop sleeping remains to be seen, but either way, Scott Summers is undoubtedly honored by his son Cable.
Children of the Vault #1 is on sale now from Marvel Comics.
