Tom Cruise may not be returning to his beloved sci-fi action franchise after all. As the legendary actor prepares to return for another installment of his Top Gun series, it was reported that he would feature in another highly anticipated follow-up as well. Rumors of a new Edge of Tomorrow film made waves online this week, but those who have waited well over a decade for the sequel will have to wait even longer.
According to Collider, a sequel to Edge of Tomorrow is not currently being developed, shutting down previous reports about the film prepping to begin production before the end of 2026. Warner Bros. still intends to produce the film at some point, but a return to the franchise, which stars Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, is not actively being explored at the moment. Director Doug Liman was also expected to return along with the lead stars. However, a concrete milestone in development has not been made, despite rumors.
Edge of Tomorrow 2 not filming this year is a disappointment for fans of the 2014 original, but it’s sort of par for the course. The critically acclaimed film, which grossed $381 million at the global box office on a $178 million budget, immediately got sequel talks at the studio. It did not take long for Liman to sign on for a sequel, with a script officially being written in 2016. However, due to the busy schedules of everyone involved, development has been slow, if not quiet, over the past 12 years.
