Ryanair announces major flight schedule update as fuel costs surge | Travel News | Travel

Ryanair has confirmed it will not be altering any flights until March 2027 owing to fuel costs.

The statement follows airlines being permitted to operate fewer services this holiday period, with a number having already implemented cancellations.

The EU transport commissioner has confirmed that airlines cancelling flights due to fuel shortages must compensate passengers under European law, though this may vary in the UK.

Since hostilities began on February 28, fuel prices have surged and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz has severed the shipping route from the Middle East.

Nevertheless, Ryanair has confirmed it holds fuel supplies through to March 2027 and will not be reducing flights in the coming months.

A spokesperson for the airline said: “As Ryanair has hedged 80% of our jet fuel to March 2027 at $67 per barrel – less than half current spot prices – we do not plan any cuts to our schedule this summer.”

Meanwhile, efforts are underway to establish realistic flight timetables to prevent passengers facing last-minute disruption.

A UK Government spokesperson said: “UK airlines are clear that they are not currently seeing a shortage of jet fuel. Aviation fuel is typically bought in advance and airports and suppliers keep stocks of bunkered fuel to support their resilience.

“We continue to work with fuel suppliers, airports, airlines and international counterparts to keep flights operating. We are also consulting on measures to help airlines plan realistic flight schedules which will avoid last-minute disruption and protect holidays.”

It came to light last week that sanctions imposed on airlines that cancel UK flights due to jet fuel shortages have been relaxed.
