Euphoria Season 3 is pulling no punches as it reaches its highly anticipated finale, with a main character’s story coming to a shocking end in the recent penultimate episode. Now, one of the stars of the show has broken their silence. Be warned, SPOILERS for Euphoria Season 3, Episode 7 “Rain or Shine” lie ahead!
Jacob Elordi had a massive glow-up after Season 1 of Euphoria began filming in 2018. The Australian heartthrob, who until then was known for his role in The Kissing Booth, has become a leading man in his own right, heading up buzzy flicks like Wuthering Heights, Saltburn and Frankenstein, which earned him an Oscar nod last year. That’s what makes the latest episode of Euphoria so shocking. In Season 3, Episode 7, titled “Rain or Shine,” the story of Elordi’s Nate Jacobs comes to a cruel but expected end.
All season long, Nate has been trying to escape the wrath of a ruthless loan shark named Naz. Nate took out the loan to save his contracting business, after construction on one of his properties was halted when the city discovered a bed of endangered flowers. Nate couldn’t come up with the money in time, and the sum eventually ballooned up to $1 million. Season 3 has seen Nate lose a toe, a finger and his wife Cassie (Syndey Sweeney) as he struggles to come up with the money. The latest episode shows the biggest loss of all.
Fed up with Nate’s inability to pay, Naz and his henchmen buried Nate alive in a tight wooden coffin. Meanwhile, Naz hunted down Cassie, who had moved out of Nate’s house to pursue acting, and gave her 72 hours to come up with the $1 million. Cassie and Maddy (Alexa Demie) eventually killed Naz with the help of Alamo, Rue’s (Zendaya) boss. When they finally found Nate and dug him out of the ground, they were too late. His cause of death? A rattlesnake that slithered down and bit him as he waited to be saved.
“That’s a cool way to go,” Elordi said in an interview aired after the show. “Nate is someone who has made so many mistakes and made, sort of, so many dark choices. It’s cool to see it all come to what it’s come to.”
Elordi added that filming Nate’s tense final moment wasn’t actually all that bad. “I had to go into this coffin. My shoulders were touching the side, and I couldn’t move my arms. And then they would drill the lid on, and it would get dark. It was really nice, actually. It was quite peaceful in there.”
Elordi said that the snake was not a real rattlesnake, but rather a boa constrictor with a rattle attached at the end. “Snakes were rattling, which was really alarming when you are locked in a box,” he said. After a while, Elordi said the snake seemed to take a liking to him. “He was super cute. He was really cuddly. So he kind of just sidled up next to me and it was nice. But he was really sleepy. He was a sleepy snake. I had to kind of nudge him to get him to come up. And that was it.”
Euphoria, the teen drama that launched many careers and even more think pieces, is just a week away from the end. Like many of the show’s fans, Elordi said the gruesome ending for his character is “bittersweet. This show is a massive part of not just my career, but my life. It’s been amazing, and I’m so proud of being a part of this.”
