A health expert has shared four signs that babies and young children may present if they are suffering from heatstroke. With all the warm weather beating the UK of late, keeping an eye on youngsters in scorching heat is a necessity.
Health expert Thorrun Govind has partnered with Jojo Maman Bébé to flag heatwave concerns, sharing four key signs in youngsters who may be suffering. Ms Govind said: “Warm weather can affect babies quickly and may increase the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion and overheating. Early signs to look out for can include fewer wet nappies, irritability, flushed skin or unusual sleepiness.
“Babies and young children are often more sensitive to heat than adults because they cannot regulate their body temperature as effectively and can lose fluids more quickly.”
The health expert also flagged possible preventive measures that could reduce the risk of the warm weather.
She said: “Sun hats are a good idea when spending time outdoors. Look for styles that help shade the face, ears and neck and are made from lightweight, breathable materials.
“During warmer weather, parents may also find it helpful to keep extra fluids, sunscreen, a sun hat, spare comfortable clothing and an umbrella or parasol for temporary shade in their baby bag.”
Peak heat hours were also flagged by Ms Govind, who says parents and grandparents must keep an extra close eye on babies and young children during those times.
She said: “When choosing sunscreen, look for broad-spectrum protection with at least SPF 30, ideally SPF 50, and formulations designed for sensitive skin.
“Shade and clothing should be the main form of protection for babies under six months, who should be kept out of direct sunlight where possible. Older babies and children should also avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours, particularly between 11am and 3pm.”
