Prime Video’s Off Campus Has Already Set Up Its Perfect 5-Season Future

Prime Video’s hit new romantic drama, Off Campus, has already set up its perfect five-season future (and maybe even more). Months before Off Campus season 1 premiered on the streamer and shared Hannah Wells’ and Garret Graham’s fake-dating, friends-to-lovers story with the world, Prime announced it had renewed Lousia Levy’s adaptation of Elle Kennedy’s bestselling book series for a second season.

Now that season 1 has arrived, it’s clear to see why. Not only has the show been a massive, global success, but episode 6, “The Breakaway,” clearly introduces the drama’s second central love story, as Hannah’s best friend, Allie, and Garrett’s team and roommate, Dean Di Laurentis, morph from a casual fling into something so much more. Allie and Dean’s being the show’s next love story is a significant departure from the books, however. In Kennedy’s source material, Garrett’s best friend, John Logan, finds his soulmate next, after realizing his feelings for Hannah weren’t as deep as he thought they were.

That’s not the only change Off Campus has made to the novels’ order of events. In a dramatic twist, Allie and Dean don’t simply walk into a relationship as they do in their book, The Score. Instead, near the end of the season, Allie hooks up with someone else, another non-team hockey player named Hunter Davenport. Crucially, the show’s version of Dean hates Hunter — potentially because of something to do with his sister — while Hunter barely figures into the original Off Campus book series (the character shows up sporadically, with Dean taking him under his wing both on and off the ice).

While this shift in Hunter and Dean’s dynamic will have undoubtedly surprised book readers, it does mean that Levy and her creative team are thinking about the show’s long-term future, even beyond Kennedy’s initial Off Campus book series.

While Kennedy’s original five-book series includes Garrett’s, Logan’s, Dean’s, and John Tucker’s love stories, as well as a “where are they now” installment, the team’s story doesn’t end there. The next generation moves into the house once the core four boys leave school, with their love stories chronicled in Off Campus’ sequel series, Briar U.

All couples’ future epilogue

Hunter’s love story with Demi Davis takes place in the third Briar U book, The Play, after an altercation on the ice leads him to commit to a personal vow of celibacy. Obviously, Garret, Logan, Dean, and Tucker will be the focus of Off Campus’ hypothetical first four seasons (no matter the order). Even so, the show could easily use Hunter’s love story for season 5, setting the stage for his future teammates to move into Garrett’s old house and find their great loves on Briar University’s leafy campus.

The Legacy‘s “Where are they now” stories could even factor into Off Campus season 5 and beyond, with Hunter keeping in touch with Dean and the rest of the boys, by extension — presumably, by then, they’ll have buried the hatchet after their upcoming love triangle dynamic with Allie — while he and his team continue to vie for the Frozen Four trophy.

Theoretically, Off Campus could even go beyond season 5. There are four books in the Briar U series; the first features Dean’s sister Summer’s romance (who has been conveniently mentioned in the show already) with Hunter’s future teammate, Colin “Fitzy” Fitzgerald. Summer and Hunter even have a brief dalliance in their book before she gets together with Fitzy, which the show could use as inspiration for why Dean hates Davenport so much, even though Hunter and Summer’s book fling ultimately ends amicably. Summer and Colin’s story could be perfect for Off Campus season 6.

If Prime’s adaptation keeps up its quality and moves along at a season-per-year pace (Off Campus season 2 has reportedly already started filming), there’s no reason the show couldn’t adapt each of Off Campus’s and Briar U’s individual book romances, bringing the show’s total seasons up to eight. The series has created the perfect structure as a Bridgerton-esque contemporary ensemble drama. Each new season can feature a new couple while introducing the next in line, keeping audiences excited for what’s to come.

Much like the books, each season will feature new romantic tropes and new personal challenges, keeping the show’s stories feeling fresh, flirty, fun, and emotionally grounded. The streamer could have a genuine, long-term hit on its hands here. After becoming Prime Video’s third-biggest launch of all time, Off Campus has what it takes to go all the way.

All episodes of Off Campus are streaming now, exclusively on Prime Video.
