After just two weeks, Netflix‘s new eight-part crime thriller has proven itself to be one of the biggest shows on streaming. Though the streaming service has scored big recently with a number of great thrillers, including Nemesis, Detective Hole, and The Witness, it’s the adaptation of a popular 2023 novel that has them all beat, as the series racked up an enormous amount of views for the week of June 22 to June 28.
Netflix Has Found Its Newest Global Smash
Released on June 18, I Will Find You takes its cues from Harlan Coben’s novel of the same name that was published three years ago. The streamer has already adapted a number of the author’s works, but none has managed to strike a chord quite like this one, and rightfully so.
The addictive eight-part miniseries stars Sam Worthington as David Burroughs, a man sent to prison for murdering his three-year-old son, Matthew. Five years later, he’s an inmate at Briggs Penitentiary in Maine when his former sister-in-law, Rachel Mills (Britt Lower), comes to him with the news that Matthew might still be alive.
Breaking out of prison with the help of the warden and his best friend, David and Rachel work together to track down Matthew, and find out what really happened the night he was killed. When you expect the series to go one way, it goes in the complete opposite direction, making it easily one of the most unpredictable shows on streaming right now.
That formula has proven to be a huge success for Netflix thus far. In its first week, I Will Find You managed to amass 24 million views, which already made it a hit. However, it was in its second week that the series really solidified itself as a global smash. Between June 22 and June 28, the crime thriller racked up a whopping 34.1 million views, making it the hottest series on Netflix and bringing its overall total to 58.1 million.
Per Tudum, viewers have spent an astounding 318,900,000 hours so far watching the new crime thriller, which just goes to show you how compelling it truly is. To further prove how big of a hit I Will Find You has become, Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 was a distant second during the reporting period, earning 8.7 million views.
‘I Will Find You’ Has Been a Success Despite Mixed Reviews
All that being said, I Will Find You’s success comes even with the series receiving a number of mixed reviews from both critics and viewers. The series currently holds a 61% score from pundits on Rotten Tomatoes, and a Popcornmeter rating of 62%. While it’s been called everything from “outstanding” to “a solid series to binge” by some, others have deemed it “cliché” and “completely implausible.”
Still, it’s clear that I Will Find You has defied its critics to become one of the biggest shows on streaming at the moment. Will it manage to hold the top spot for three weeks in a row? We’ll find out for certain on July 8 when the numbers come out, but in the meantime, make sure you binge all eight episodes of the twisty crime thriller streaming now on Netflix.
