- Patrick Dempsey addressed speculation about a potential U.S. Senate run in Maine.
- Dempsey stated he believes he can make a more meaningful difference through his charitable work.
As Democrats continue searching for a potential replacement for Maine Democrat Graham Platner, speculation briefly swirled around former Grey’s Anatomy star Patrick Dempsey as a possible contender. Dempsey has since responded to the rumors, but his answer may not be quite what some were hoping.
In an op-ed piece penned for the Portland Press Herald, the actor wrote: “Over the past several days, I’ve been asked a question more than once: Would you ever run for the United States Senate? It’s flattering, and I don’t take it lightly. I love my home state of Maine. I care deeply about the people who live there and, like so many Americans, I’m concerned about the direction our country is heading.”
And in his piece, Dempsey mentioned that he gave weight to the decision and truly considered the career switch. “I gave it real thought,” he wrote. “Not because I was looking for a new career, but because I asked myself an honest question: Could I make a meaningful difference? That question led me to another one I think matters even more. What kind of leadership are we really looking for?”
However, the Memory of a Killer star ultimately disappointed hopeful fans who had been wanting to see him enter the race.
“After a lot of thought, I realized the answer is no. Not because public service isn’t honorable — it absolutely is. But because I believe I can contribute more effectively through the life I’ve already built,” wrote Dempsey.
Dempsey reflected on whether he could “make a meaningful difference” in Congress but concluded the answer was no. Instead, he believes his work through the Dempsey Center, which provides free support services to cancer patients and their families, allows him to serve people more effectively.
While declining to run, Dempsey also outlined the qualities he hopes to see in Maine’s next Democratic Senate candidate. He called for a leader who leads with empathy and integrity, listens before speaking and works across party lines, focuses on service over power, puts people before party, and tells the truth.
Dempsey ended by making it clear he is not running for office, saying he believes he can help people more by continuing his work with the Dempsey Center than by serving in Congress.
“Remember that public office is a privilege, not a career path, and that leadership isn’t measured by how loudly you speak or how often you’re on television. It’s measured by whether people’s lives are better because you served,” he concluded. “That’s the kind of leadership Maine deserves. It’s the kind of leadership America deserves, too.”
Dempsey currently stars as Angelo Doyle in the Fox crime drama Memory of a Killer, which premiered on January 25, 2026. The series was renewed for a second season in April 2026.
