New Fallout Game’s Release Date Might Be Closer Than We Thought

It’s been a huge couple of weeks for Fallout fans, to say the least. After a report suggested that a new game was in development from Fallout: New Vegas developer Obsidian Entertainment, Bethesda Game Studios followed up to confirm the new game, remasters of Fallout 3 and New Vegas, and offer an update on Fallout 5.

Even so, fans didn’t have any reason to believe that a new entry would be coming particularly soon, as Obsidian’s game would presumably be at the start of its development cycle. According to the latest report, however, it could actually be significantly further along.

Yesterday, Windows Central reported that Obsidian has been working on a “very Fallout-y” project for up to two years, although the “apocalypse-style franchise” wasn’t officially connected to Fallout. While it’s not yet clear how connected that will be to the new Fallout game, it stands to reason that a lot of this development work could potentially be directly converted into the next entry.

This expands on previous reporting from Bloomberg, which suggested Josh Sawyer (the lead on both Fallout: New Vegas and Obsidian’s new game) “had been directing a roleplaying game that was similar structurally and thematically to Fallout.” Windows Central emphasizes the shared DNA even more, claiming that Xbox even debated whether the previous Obsidian project “should be made in Unreal or Creation Engine,” with the latter serving as the backbone for the modern Fallout series.

Hopefully, Obsidian will indeed be able to pick up where it left off in some regards and not scrap the work on a Fallout-like game. Not only does this mean we could get a new entry a lot faster, but it would also avoid wasting the work of a talented team over the past year or two.

This wouldn’t be the first time that Obsidian has danced around making a new Fallout game, as the Outer Worlds franchise also strikes a relatively similar flavor and tone. After underwhelming sales for The Outer Worlds 2 and the studio’s latest pivot, it’s probably safe to assume that The Outer Worlds won’t be coming back any time soon.

In the meantime, fans can expect to see a Fallout 3 prequel story in the form of a Fallout 76 expansion next year. By then, we might also be able to get some more concrete news on what to expect from Obsidian’s new Fallout title.
