UK holidaymakers have been warned about certain parts of Spain, with millions of Brits expected to visit the popular European destination this year.
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) provides guidance for travel to more than 220 countries and territories worldwide, covering everything from entry requirements and safety concerns to health measures and local rules.
In a new alert issued on Friday afternoon (July 24), the FCDO said: “Spanish authorities have declared a national emergency because of wildfires in parts of Madrid and Ávila. There are also reports of wildfires in other inland areas of Spain.”
Anyone in an area affected by a wildfire is advised to “follow instructions from local authorities and emergency services at all times; avoid travelling to or through affected areas; check updates from the emergency services; and call 112 if you need emergency help”.
Similar wildfires are sadly taking place in France also. Wildfires are currently ravaging areas of Gironde in south-western France, with the blazes impacting regions surrounding Le Porge and Lège-Cap-Ferret.
French authorities have moved to evacuate a number of campsites and tourist accommodation in the affected zones, with the FCDO warning that access to these areas may be limited, and that road closures could be implemented at short notice.
Wildfires happen often in Spain and France, especially during the summer months.
