5 Reasons Why Morticia and Gomez Are Relationship Goals

For almost every movie and TV series that is released, one or several couples emerge to endear themselves to millions of people in the audience. Many of them grow into inspiring icons of popular culture that make us believe in true love and think that we, too, can be part of a fairy tale. When we talk about perfect movie couples, chances are that each person in the audience thinks of a different one. Some people may recall Jack and Rose from Titanic, while others’ minds jump straight to Allie and Noah from The Notebook.

The choice of that perfect couple depends entirely on how each person envisions love and what they are looking for in a relationship. But there is one movie couple that, over the years, has cemented itself as a huge audience favorite despite being highly unconventional: Morticia and Gomez Addams.

Morticia and Gomez lead The Addams Family, a creation of cartoonist Charles Addams that, as time went by, has been adapted many times to film, television, and even theater, with performances by major industry players. One of the most popular portrayals of Morticia and Gomez was probably the one by Anjelica Huston and Raul Julia in the 1991 film The Addams Family and its sequel, but the movie couple was also played by John Astin and Carolyn Jones in the 1964 TV show, Oscar Isaac and Charlize Theron in the 2019 animated film, and Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzman in the Netflix TV series Wednesday, to name a few other actors who were cast as these characters.

Regardless of which actors play them, one thing stays the same: Morticia and Gomez are one of the best couples this industry has ever treated us to. Here’s why.

They’re Ridiculously Attracted to One Another (And It Shows)

This may seem like a pretty obvious point, and yet it is the most important aspect of Morticia and Gomez’s relationship. These two characters have been together for many years, and yet they still resemble two teenagers who have just discovered what love feels like. They are crazy about one another, and they never hesitate to show it, whether it’s with a passionate kiss or the most flattering compliment they can come up with.

Years have only strengthened their relationship even more, as they continue to choose each other day after day, avoiding monotony, and unafraid when it comes to letting people know how much they love each other. They can hardly keep their hands to themselves, which sometimes makes their children uneasy.

This representation of such a vivid and spirited love in an already consolidated couple is not so frequent to witness, as TV series and movies mostly show married couples who no longer feel the spark from the early days of the relationship, even if they still have feelings for one another.

No matter how perfect a relationship may be, nothing should be taken for granted. Love fades, things get tough, and when the road gets bumpy, not everyone is willing to put in the effort to move forward. But Morticia and Gomez are. Their relationship isn’t perfect, but their love for one other is so strong that it can overcome any obstacle.

There is nothing Gomez wouldn’t do for Morticia, and the same goes for her. To top it all off, they both strive to keep their flame alive and despite having been together for so long, they still try to be the best version of themselves to impress the other. Every moment they’re together feels like the first time for them, and the effort pays off in spades.

They’re Quirky and Not Afraid to Show It

Morticia and Gomez are not precisely the kind of people who can go unnoticed, and whether it is for their spooky appearance or their excessive yet charming public displays of love, they tend to draw the attention of everyone who comes their way.

But unlike many other quirky characters in movies and television, this freaky couple is very proud of who they are, and they are not afraid to show their true colors, regardless of the way society might perceive them. Even if their lifestyle or the way they choose to raise their children is incomprehensible to others, the Addams’ don’t mind what people have to say, which is something they successfully passed on to their kids.

Since Morticia and Gomez have such a strong bond nurtured by the love they have for each other, they do a great job as parents. This couple has proven to be up to the daunting task of parenthood, supporting their kids as a team without overpowering one another and attempting to be the best they can be. Even when they don’t fully understand what their children want, or why they do the things they do, Morticia and Gomez go out of their way to support them as needed, constantly reminding them of how much they love them.

But their excellent job as parents is not restricted to the happy moments: when their kids are getting out of control or struggling, they are also there to set boundaries or discuss what’s going on, so they can help them improve.

Best Dance Couple Ever

This last point may seem insignificant when compared to all the others, but the chemistry Morticia and Gomez have while dancing is simply electrifying. They really set the dance floor on fire! Several productions over the years have featured these characters dancing together, starting with the episode “Lurch Learns to Dance” from the 1964 TV series, in which Morticia and Gomez teach Lurch to twist and tango so that he could do better on the dance floor at social gatherings.

However, when it comes to dance scenes featuring these two characters, you can’t think of any other couple than Anjelica Huston and Raul Julia, who played Morticia and Gomez in the 1991 film The Addams Family and its 1993 sequel, Addams Family Values. While you can see the chemistry this couple has on the dance floor in both productions, the 1993 installment features one of the best dance scenes in the history of cinema: Morticia and Gomez dancing to a tango that blows the audience away and proves, once again, how madly in love they are with one another.
