Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures are officially back in theaters with the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the MCU’s fourth solo Spider-Man movie. Behind Tom Holland’s titular web-slinger, the story brings Peter Parker back to his street-level roots, pitting him against terrifying new villains like Michael Mando’s Scorpion and also setting him up to deal with a mysterious mind-jumping threat that could be more dangerous than anything he has seen before. This also comes as Peter deals with the ramifications of Doctor Strange’s spell from 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, which made the entire world forget about his existence.
While Spider-Man has always been one of the most popular comic book characters, expectations for his fourth MCU solo movie are through the roof critically and financially. The first two trailers both shattered view count records in their first 24 hours online, and the inclusion of characters like the Punisher and the Hulk has added more anticipation to see how this universe will expand. This does not even count the mystery behind Stranger Things star Sadie Sink’s character, which has dominated the internet since she was first cast. Now, all that hype is translating into massive dollars for the MCU’s latest entry.
Variety shared the initial Thursday night box office preview numbers for Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The outlet reported that MCU’s fourth Spider-Man movie grossed $72 million in its opening Thursday night previews, including early access screenings starting Wednesday. This is the highest total for any movie in history for Thursday night previews, surpassing the $60 million that Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame grossed in 2019. For comparison, this movie’s predecessor, 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, grossed $50 million in the same timeframe.
