Since his iconic but short-lived introduction in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, Maul has become a fixture of the Star Wars galaxy and one of the franchise’s all-time best antagonists. Crucially though, unlike Vader and Sidious, Maul hasn’t been an official Sith since 1999. He’s not the only non-Sith dark-sider in the franchise, of course. George Lucas knew he made a mistake killing Maul off at the end of The Phantom Menace. Though the Zabrak Sith apprentice had a massive impact on the story, killing Qui-Gon Jinn and arguably Anakin Skywalker’s best chance at a normal life, there was so much more Maul could become. When he was resurrected in the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars (at Lucas’ request), Maul’s story became a tragedy, driven by revenge, jealousy, greed, grief, and psychological trauma.
Since being found by his brother at the bottom of what can only be described as a trash heap, Maul has become one of Star Wars’ most complex and resilient characters. Rather than being a Sith, he’s actively fighting against them, determined to see Palpatine suffer for his abuse and neglect. Building his own criminal empire, hunting for an apprentice of his own, all of that has been in service of his mission: to rid the galaxy of the Sith’s influence.
More than anyone, he’s always known the threat Palpatine posed, as he proved during his duel with Anakin Skywalker’s former Padawan Ahsoka Tano in the final moments of the Clone Wars, when Maul begged Ahsoka to let him die because he knew what the galaxy would soon suffer. Even in his dying moments in Star Wars Rebels, all he wanted was to know that Palpatine would one day lose.

In the undeniably excellent Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, Maul is as menacing and cunning as ever. He approaches each interaction as a negotiation, luring young Order 66 survivor Devon Izara into his trap. He outmaneuvers two Inquisitors and even survives a long-awaited duel with Vader (with a little help from a Jedi Master). Still, the most interesting part of Shadow Lord‘s story is Maul’s emotional vulnerability. Maul is physically and mentally affected by his brother’s death and his Master’s abuse. After a particularly harrowing Force vision, Maul is even shown to be crying, a rare display of emotion for a Star Wars villain.
In some ways, Maul is the ultimate anti-hero. Shadow Lord positions him as the protagonist of his own story. He’s a true unmasked Star Wars villain, a terrifyingly complex presence in a galaxy that has historically been clearly divided between good and evil, light and dark. Most importantly, he’s not a Sith. What could Star Wars do and become if the franchise were to let its biggest and most important stories focus on something other than the Jedi’s ancient enemies?
Star Wars Doesn’t Need The Sith To Tell A Great Story
Maul’s status as a former Sith is one of the most interesting things about him. He’s completely turned on his former Master and religion, recognizing the threat it poses not just to himself but to the entire galaxy. He doesn’t need to be a Sith to lead an incredible story; in fact, Star Wars as a whole doesn’t need the Sith to tell a compelling story, even when it involves the Jedi. Including the Sith creates certain expectations. How could Star Wars ever top Darth Sidious’ incredible scheming or Darth Vader’s imposing presence?
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker would likely have been much better received if it hadn’t reintroduced the Sith as its overarching villains. Like Maul, Kylo Ren wasn’t a true Sith, but something in between that made him all the more compelling. Palpatine’s resurrection dragged the story, the characters, and even the entire trilogy down, overly focused on the past rather than building towards the future. Since then, other, newer Star Wars stories have proven that the Sith aren’t the only enemies capable of actively diminishing the Jedi’s ranks.
InStar Wars: The High Republic, set roughly 300–100 years before the Skywalker saga, the Jedi and the Republic are torn apart by a vicious group of marauders known as the Nihil. Their leader, Marchion Ro, is just as ruthless as Maul and as cunning as Palpatine and harbors a similar hatred for the Jedi, hunting them down with terrifying Force-eating creatures known as the Nameless. Throughout dozens of books and comics, the Nihil cause immense destruction across the galaxy. One could even argue that Marchion Ro’s crusade allowed Palpatine’s prequel-era schemes to succeed, forcing the Republic and the Jedi to become overly reliant on one another.
Maul Will Return In Star Wars’ Best New Animated Show

Thankfully, Star Wars’ best non-Sith villain will return to the galaxy far, far away in Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord season 2. Lucasfilm has clearly recognized Maul’s enduring appeal, having renewed the show for its sophomore season before season 1 had even premiered on Disney+. After surviving his brutal duel with Darth Vader and finally securing his much-longed-for apprentice — the death of Devon’s Master has essentially forced her to team up with Maul — he’ll be one step closer to becoming the all-powerful crime lord briefly glimpsed in Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Though we know Maul’s story ends on Tatooine in Star Wars Rebels, there’s so much more to learn about his life of crime and trauma between Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord and meeting Ezra Bridger on Malachor. The more we discover about Maul, the more interesting he becomes. Distancing Maul’s character from the Sith is one of the best things Star Wars has ever done.
