Jason Statham’s New 95-Minute Action Thriller Hit Is Already Planning a Sequel: “100%”

In Mutiny, our explosive story begins when, after witnessing his billionaire boss’ murder and being framed for the crime, Cole Reed (Statham) boards a cargo ship on a one-man crusade to avenge his death, only to discover an international conspiracy.

Without giving away too many spoilers (not that there are many, this is a no-nonsense Jason Statham-led action movie, after all), co-star Annabelle Wallis, best known for roles in the likes of Peaky Blinders and Malignant, revealed exclusively to MovieWeb that Mutiny 2 is already something that’s been discussed behind the scenes, with both Wallis and Statham having pitched “crazy ideas” for which isolated setting the follow-up could go to next. Asked whether Mutiny 2 is on the horizon, Wallis said…

“100%. You see me in that last shot, looking over my shoulder. I’m waiting for it, and Jason and I were pitching ideas. And we’re like, wow, we could have Mutiny on… and we would come up with these crazy ideas. Yeah, look, in success, I think that’s really a reality. Let’s see, I hope audiences enjoy it. And if they want it, I think all the people involved would definitely deliver.”

Over the last several years, Jason Statham has become synonymous with action and is consistently able to find both box office and streaming success with his throwback thrillers. However, as Wallis states, the fate of Mutiny 2 all depends on how successful the first outing is. And things are a little mixed in that regard right now.

Critics have been split right down the middle when it comes to Mutiny, with the action thriller now holding a score of 50% on Rotten Tomatoes (though it has a far more impressive 85% from audiences). One critic who found a lot to love was MovieWeb’s own Julian Roman, who said, “There’s not much thinking required, and that’s blissfully okay in a straightforward action thriller with a legitimate body count.”

While the critical reactions don’t necessarily determine if a franchise is born (the audience response is still pending), Mutiny’s box office results could be deeply and detrimentally affected by a recent mistake made by Amazon. For a few hours, Mutiny was made available in its entirety on the streaming platform Prime Video two days before its planned theatrical release in what has been described as a potential “multimillion-dollar problem.” Hopefully, audiences will show up for Mutiny, and Wallis and Statham’s “crazy ideas” will be realized in an all-new action thriller franchise that leaps from boat, to plane, to spaceship, to who knows where.
