HGTV is going all in on ’90s nostalgia to promote its newest series.
Premiering Wednesday, August 26, Totally ’90s House will see teams of ’90s icons transform houses stuck in the past into chic, modern homes while still keeping a bit of ’90s charm. Ahead of the show’s premiere, the network teased the show’s title sequence via Instagram.
Mimicking a classic ’90s TV sitcom title sequence, the preview opens with host Jaleel White using a handheld video camera. Melissa Joan Hart paid tribute to her Sabrina the Teenage Witch role by sporting a witch hat, while Keshia Knight Pulliam snapped a photo with a vintage camera.
For their intros, Brian Austin Green and Beverley Mitchell busted out portable DVD and CD players, respectively, while Matthew and Joey Lawrence played with classic video game consoles. Jodie Sweetin, for her part, took a call on a brick cell phone.
Fans gushed over the nostalgic preview in the post’s comments. “Oh, my teenage heart! Seeing all these faces from my 90s era together again?! Yeahhhhhh, I’m watching!!!” one user wrote. Another quipped, “This is a fever dream….. I love everything about it.”
Someone else shared, “Love that you featured so much vintage tech!” A different person posted, “There is nothing I don’t like about this promo.” A separate commenter stated, “This cast is insane!!!”
Assisting the celebrity teams with their renovations are mentors Carter Oosterhouse and Sabrina Soto. The show’s judges include Brian and Mika Kleinschmidt, Drew Lachey, Mina Starsiak Hawk, Paige Davis, and Jonathan Adler. The winning team will take home bragging rights and a $25,000 donation to the charity of their choice.
While the show’s cast will renovate homes on the small screen, they will also get home transformations of their own on the new HGTV YouTube series Celebrity Style: 90s Edition. In addition to Totally ’90s House stars Sweetin, Green, Mitchell, and Matthew, the series will also feature Tahj Mowry and Andrew Keegan working on home DIY projects with host MaCenna Lee.
The show’s premiere episode, which dropped on Saturday, August 22, saw Lee tour Matthew’s home and help the actor build a “DIY tortoise bench” for his outdoor animals.
“I love his house! With celebrity house tours you often get the sense that they don’t really LIVE there, it is polished and designed but has no actual personality,” one user commented under the YouTube video. “With Matt’s house you know he really lives here, has built a life here and cherishes his in and outdoor space!”
Another said, “Macenna is a natural! She would be great for helping every day people to do renovations! Keep the series going!” Someone else wrote, “Love this collab with McKenna! I had no clue Matthew Lawrence had such a passion for reptiles and amphibians. Learn something new every day.”
