Trying‘s fifth season has come to a close, and so has the chapter of Princess (Scarlett Rayner) waiting around for her biological mom, Kat (Charlotte Riley), to be the parental figure she wishes. Warning: Spoilers for the Trying Season 5 finale!
After rallying the family together for WoodScott, an event meant to lift Scott’s (Darren Boyd) spirits, some harsh truths were spoken as Princess believed she was talking with her adoptive mom, Nikki (Esther Smith), who donned a goose suit for the occasion. Unbeknownst to Princess, Kat had taken over goose suit duties, allowing her to hear firsthand how Princess has spent so much of her life waiting around for Kat, and she needs to start living for herself and finding out who she is.
Ultimately, Kat decides to travel to Thailand, claiming she’d gotten a job teaching yoga there, leaving Nikki and Jason (Rafe Spall) to resume their parental duties without her interference. It’s a tough decision, but one that seems to serve everyone best for the time being, as Smith tells TV Insider, “Obviously that’s very upsetting for Princess, but I think it feels like there’s a group understanding that this is the best choice for everyone, even if it is as heartbreaking as it is.”

“It’s a really lovely, mature and collective understanding that this is the best thing for Princess and what I really like about the season is that Kat’s not vilified at all,” Smith continues, adding, “she’s not a bad person, which I think’s really important to show that.” As viewers who have been watching this cozy British comedy from Apple TV since its debut, Princess and Tyler (Cooper Turner) were adopted years ago by Nikki and Jason, and Kat only reentered the picture when Nikki connected with her at the end of Season 4.
While there’s mutual affection on all sides, it’s clear that Kat runs on her own schedule and whims, which may be right for her, but isn’t necessarily right for her kids, making Jason and Nikki an optimal fit for this phase of their lives. When Kat hears how Princess really feels about the familial predicament, she chooses to remove herself from the equation for now, which Smith says, “[Kat]’s making that parental sacrifice… the best decision for Princess ultimately, which is love. And that’s beautiful.”
On a sillier side of things, we also asked Smith about donning the Gloria the Goose costume, which stood as the mascot of WoodScott. “I’m really thankful for that question. That was a warm costume to be wearing, and just also hilarious because you’ve got this huge head on and you’re still acting away and you realize you’re acting and no one can see your face.”
One particular moment Smith highlighted as well is that “There’s also a hilarious moment where Scott picks me up and like spins me around. It’s such a bizarre circumstance to find myself in, but really fun.”
