Survivors await aid, dread aftershocks in Morocco village stricken by quake

Like many other settlements in Morocco’s stricken Atlas Mountains, the village of Moulay Brahim suffered serious damage and high casualties in Friday’s devastating earthquake. The remaining residents have left their homes, living in fear of aftershocks as they wait for desperately needed aid to reach them. FRANCE 24’s Jean-Marie Lemaire sent this report.

The 6.8-magnitude quake that struck a mountainous area southwest of Marrakech has claimed more than 2,100 lives and injured over 2,400, many of them seriously.

In Moulay Brahim, a remote village located close to the quake’s epicentre, dozens of people have been confirmed dead and many more are still missing.

“We’re living through a catastrophe,” says local resident Farima Boujaoune. “We sleep in the cold, we wake up and our blankets are wet. There are no real tents or any other shelters. We’re afraid of more aftershocks.”
