While speaking to Deadline, film producer Sam Pressman opened up about The Crow and claimed that the upcoming reboot will “blow people away” and has the potential to expand the franchise.
The Crow first appeared as a supernatural comic book series created by James O’Barr and was first published in 1989.
1994’s crime drama film The Crow starred Brandon Lee, Rochelle Davis, Ernie Hudson, Michael Wincott, Ling Bai, and Sofia Shinas. The cult classic tells the story of a brutally murdered man (played by Lee) who returns from the dead to punish those responsible for he and his fiancée’s murder. Lee is widely celebrated for his iconic performance as Eric Draven. However, because the star was tragically killed during an accident while filming the movie, Lee was never able to celebrate the film’s success.
The upcoming reboot of The Crow is currently set to release in 2024. The film is directed by Rupert Sanders and written by Zach Baylin, Kevin Cornish, and Cliff Dorfman. The Crow will star Bill Skarsgård as Eric Draven and will also feature Lauren Birn, Danny Huston, FKA Twigs, Jordan Bolger, Sami Bouajila, and Isabella Wei.
Sam Pressman Called the Film “A Very Central and Integral Part of Our Company”
While chatting about the upcoming film, Pressman (son of Ed Pressman, the independent producer behind notable films like Wall Street, American Psycho, and The Crow) told the outlet:
“The Crow has been a very central and integral part of our company and I’m really proud of the process and the work that has been done. I think the movies is just going to blow people away. Our partners want to approach it in a very 360 way, whether it be video games, an animated series or a universe, but it’s got this cosmic legacy that can expand beyond a singular story.”
The producer added, “We’re finally at a point where we can really explore those other avenues because it’s such a unique property in that it is not a studio film, it’s not a Marvel film — it’s kind of an anti-Marvel film. I have the highest hopes for that and I really love what Molly Hassell has done in pushing it up the hill and Rupert Sanders is such a visionary.”
Previously, while reporting that the reboot had been picked up by Lionsgate, Deadline shared a statement from Charlotte Koh, Lionsgate EVP Acquisitions and Co-Production. The message said, “We appreciate what the Crow character and original movie mean to legions of fans and believe this new film will offer audiences an authentic and visceral reinterpretation of its emotional power and mythology.”
The statement went on to say, “To work with a creative team led by Rupert’s unparalleled visual style and storytelling and with a producing team who have made some of the most popular and impactful films of the last several decades is a true privilege.”
A joint statement from the producers added:
“The original film left an indelible mark on our culture that lives on. We are thrilled to bring a new adaptation for today’s audiences that respects this legacy. Rupert has masterfully brought new dimensions to create a contemporary universe for this timeless saga of undying love, and we can’t wait to share this vision with film audiences.”
