When destinations such as Venice or Florence seem too distant, there’s a Yorkshire town offering similar serenity – and it’ll certainly spare you the airfare.

One visitor recently described the town on social media as the ‘Italy of England’, a comment which appears to have resonated with people.

Knaresborough is a charming and historic spa town in North Yorkshire which evokes the atmosphere of the Italian Riviera, thanks to its dramatic cliffs and gorge.

With medieval lanes and staircases winding through the town’s various levels, it’s undeniably brimming with character. The town centre perches atop the cliffs, while beneath flows the River Nidd alongside its famous railway viaduct, providing spectacular views for those arriving by rail.

Knaresborough Viaduct stands as a prominent landmark in the area, carrying the Harrogate line across the River Nidd into the town, bringing with it a fascinating backstory.

The line was originally scheduled to open in 1848, but while still under construction, it suffered a collapse into the river, postponing completion by three years. As it exists today, the viaduct towers approximately 80 feet above ground level, featuring four striking stone arches.

One visitor said on Tripadvisor: “The town is idyllic. The viaduct is awe-inspiring. The view you want is from the castle, but it’s still gorgeous even if you don’t make it up there.”

Another visitor added: “Really lovely place with a magnificent railway viaduct which you can walk underneath. You can hire a boat if you want and row a short way or walk up to the castle and admire the view from above. A very elegant place and worth a visit for a couple of hours.”

With no advance booking necessary, visitors can simply turn up along the riverside and hire one of the charming rowing boats, offered by Blenhorn’s Boats, allowing them to glide beneath the viaduct themselves.

However, for truly spectacular panoramic views of the town, previous visitors have recommended climbing up to the castle, a ruined fortress tucked away within the clifftops. Here, guests can not only discover the area’s fascinating history but also enjoy the finest vistas of the river and viaduct.

A paid car park sits outside the Castle Grounds, with a maximum stay of four hours, making it an ideal starting point for a day trip before venturing down into the heart of the town. Entry to the castle grounds requires a fee, currently set at £4.40 for adults, £2.50 for children and £13.00 for a family ticket.

One guest wrote in a Google review: “Knaresborough Castle is a beautiful place to enjoy the view of the river Nidd and the viaduct. We were there as the sun was setting, and it was truly stunning and very special to be there with my daughter and special friends.”
