Robert De Niro got emotional during a podcast appearance. The 83-year-old Hollywood icon appeared visibly moved while speaking with Amy Poehler on her Good Hang podcast. Poehler took a moment to thank De Niro for openly speaking about issues that matter to him, including his vocal criticism of Donald Trump and his administration.

During the September 15 episode, Poehler praised the actor for using his platform to speak up. She said, “I just personally want to thank you for doing what you do and speaking out in the way that you do about where we are in the world. There are a lot of people that are asked to speak truth to power, and they’re usually members of the margins. There are people that are young and don’t really have as much currency or footing as other people. It’s often people of color. It’s often women.”
Poehler went on to praise De Niro for using his unique position to speak up for people’s rights. She described him as “the best actor of our generation.” She said that De Niro stands out among “white men of a certain age who have a ton of power” but do not always use that responsibility to speak out.
An emotional De Niro thanked Poehler for her comments. Speaking in a shaky voice, he expressed, “It’s so upsetting to see what’s happening in this country, and it’s so crazy.” The actor, who has been an outspoken critic of Trump, said, “In a way, that’s better that it’s so blatant because this will happen again; this guy will influence people, and they’ll come up, and they’ll say, ‘Well, I can do it this way or that way.’ And we have to always be on guard with what’s happening now.”
De Niro has never shied away from making his views on Trump known. The Taxi Driver star has been a vocal critic of Trump since his first presidential campaign and has continued to speak out publicly over the years.
