The world’s best airlines for 2026 have been named, with British Airways dropping out of the top 20. Singapore Airlines grabbed the top spot in the event hosted by Skytrax at London’s Langham Hotel on September 18 – the Skytrax Awards, dubbed the aviation industry’s Oscars.
This marks the sixth time Singapore Airlines has bagged the top prize in the awards’ 25-year history, adding to previous wins in 2023, 2018 and again in the 2000s. It knocked last year’s winner, Qatar Airways, which has won nine times in the past 15 years, to second place. Goh Choon Phong, the winning airline’s CEO, said the accolade was a “testament to the dedication and professionalism of our people.”
Cathay Pacific Airways, Japan’s All Nippon Airways, Turkish Airlines and Emirates rounded out the top six.
British Airways, the UK’s largest international carrier, fell to 23rd place in the global rankings, down from 13th last year. The airline is officially certified as a 4-Star Airline by Skytrax for its airport facilities, onboard products, and staff service.
Ryanair dropped one place to 64 in the global rankings while Jet2 retained its position at 67.
Another low-cost airline, easyJet, fell seven places to 68 while Aer Lingus, the flag carrier of Ireland, fell 14 places to 69 while TUI Airways dropped five places to 83.
Singapore Airlines also picked up trophies for its economy class and economy class catering. Qatar Airways was named the best airline in the Middle East, while also receiving awards for its business class, onboard Wi-Fi and business-class lounge.
Meanwhile, Cathay Pacific was recognised for its cabin crew and first-class lounge.
Bangkok Airways was named the best airline in Asia and the world’s best regional airline. Ethiopian Airlines topped the rankings in Africa, while Chilean multinational carrier LATAM was recognised as the leading airline in South America. Turkish Airlines was named the best airline in Europe.
Air France picked up the award for best first class and EVA Air, another Taiwanese carrier, won best premium economy and the top five budget airlines were named as: AirAsia, Scoot, Vueling, Eurowings and Iberia Express.
