Stepping into Craig’s shoes as the embattled journalist is Emmy and Golden Globe nominee David Oyelowo, whose commanding screen presence elevated the historical drama Selma and the acclaimed Apple TV sci-fi series Silo. Meanwhile, the formidable task of inheriting Mara’s iconic cyber sleuth falls to rising star Viola Prettejohn, according to casting details first published by Variety. Best known for her standout performance as a young Queen Elizabeth II in Netflix’s The Crown and her role in The Witcher, Prettejohn brings a fresh energy to the complex antiheroine. Interestingly, Prettejohn previously played a younger version of Claire Foy in The Crown – the very actress who last tackled the role of Lisbeth Salander on film.
The eight-part Sky Original series, produced in partnership with Left Bank Pictures, marks a shift away from the big screen to allow for a more expansive, long-form exploration of Stieg Larsson’s Millennium universe. With the primary cast locked in, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series is moving swiftly out of development and straight into production. Filming is scheduled to begin in Lithuania in October, where the creative team will construct a deeper, more comprehensive look into the complex dynamics of the wider Vanger family than any previous film adaptation could manage.
