‘Real deal’ chocolate brownie recipe that’s good for the stomach and blood sugar

Many people love a chocolate brownie with their afternoon cuppa but for those watching their weight it can be a no-go option. With the traditional recipes packed with butter and sugar it means a bite size piece can be around 200-300 calories and the bigger options are much higher – such as a Starbucks Double Chocolate Brownie which works out at 450-480 calories.

However a wellness expert has shared a recipe which he says is good for the stomach and “won’t send your blood sugar through the roof. And he promises the health benefits don’t come at the cost of the taste as it is still as good as “the real deal”.

Posting on Instagram Dre Carter asked his 396,000 followers: “How old were you when you found out that if you crack an egg into cocoa powder and whisk it until the batter is completely smooth, add a little honey and Greek yogurt into the bowl, then whisk it until it turns light brown, pour it into a greased pan, bake it at 350 for 20 minutes, then let it cool, you end up with fudgy brownies that not only taste like the real deal, but are easy on the stomach, feed the good bacteria in your gut, and will not send your blood sugar through the roof. No refined sugar, low carbs, high protein.”

His video showed him creating the treat, baking it and then the end result leaving many of his fans loving the idea while others had questions. While most reacted positively, some asked if the ingredients were as healthy as he said.

Glorie said: “Yes that looks amazing but isn’t cocoa powder pure sugar?” However others were quick to give the answer. One said: “Pure cocoa powder should have ZERO sugar. Just ground up cacao beans.”

Maria said: “Taste a tiny bit. Tell us what you think.” Daisy agreed saying: “No. Drinking chocolate has added sugar. Have you ever dipped the tip of your finger into cocoa powder?”

Another also offered advice saying: “He is using unsweetened cocoa powder. You can buy sweetened and unsweetened. Unsweetened is very bitter. Hope this helps.”

Others asked for the exact written recipe rather than having to guess the measurements. Arlo spoke for many with their post which said: ” I think I would like to have the actual written recipe.”

While the post did not share the written recipe other people have posted their versions of healthy brownies elsewhere on the internet. Arman Liew, posting on The Big Man’s World website, has one which has a five-star rating from hundreds of readers. It makes 12 brownies and takes 35 minutes.

He says: ” Greek yogurt brownies are lower far and sugar free brownies that use yogurt to replace any oil or butter! Gooey, fudgy, and made in one bowl, they are a guilt-free chocolate treat- Each brownie is under 100 calories!”

  • 100g sugar of choice (white, brown, sugar-free granules etc.)

  • 90g plain flour (gluten-free if needed)

  • 170g chocolate chips (optional)

  • Preheat your oven to 180°C / 350°F (Gas Mark 4). Line an 8 × 8-inch (20 × 20-cm) baking tin with parchment paper and set aside.

Place the chopped chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl and melt it. Let it sit for 1–2 minutes, then add the yogurt, vanilla extract, and sugar. Whisk until completely smooth, then transfer to a large mixing bowl.

Add the flour, cocoa powder, and bicarbonate of soda to the bowl and mix until just combined. Pour in the milk and stir well until fully incorporated. Fold in the chocolate chips, if using.

Pour the batter into the lined tin and bake for 25–30 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Remove from the oven and let cool in the tin for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Each brownie is 91kcal and contains 15g of carbohydrates, 3g of fat, 3g of protein and 2g of fibre.
