5 common cruise mistakes including 2 passengers make on first day | Cruise | Travel

When it comes to cruises, there’s plenty to think about from what’s going in your suitcase to the itineraries and which areas of the ship you plan to explore first. However there are some common cruise mistakes that all passengers can be guilty of making, whether it’s their very first sailing or they’re cruise fans who book a trip every year.

We take a look at five common mistakes, including two that most people will make on embarkation day. Take note of the below and it could help make your holiday as smooth as possible.

1. Check your travel insurance

If you have an existing travel insurance policy, don’t assume that cruise cover is included. Check your policy and if it isn’t, either speak to your provider about adding cruise cover on, or it’s worth looking at a one-off policy that includes cruise cover for your trip. Cruises require specialist insurance – if something goes wrong and you need to disembark, it could end up being a very costly oversight.

2. Not all ships are the same

Think about what type of holiday you’re after. If it’s waterparks, huge shows and heaps of dining, Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line have ships that fit the bill. For those who want a more intimate feel and fine dining, P&O Cruises can be ideal, while Marella Cruises and Virgin Voyages offer adults-only ships. Do your research and speak to a travel agent if you’re a first-timer and want some guidance.

3. Check what’s included

Cruises can offer great value for money given your fare includes food, accommodation, sailing between the ports and entertainment. However, not all cruises are completely all-inclusive; some do charge extra for a-la-carte restaurants, spa services, drinks and Wi-Fi packages. Knowing what you need to budget for before you get onboard means you won’t be hit with any nasty surprise bills at the end of your holiday.

4. Avoid flying on embarkation day

If you book your flights directly through your cruise line, they are responsible for getting you to the ship. However if you book your own flights, make sure you give yourself a buffer; if you fly on embarkation day but your flight is delayed or cancelled, you could miss your ship’s departure. Finding a new flight to catch your ship up at the next port can be costly and stressful, so if you book your own flights make sure you factor in plenty of time in case something does go awry.

5. Don’t rush to the buffet on embarkation day

Most passengers will arrive on the ship, head to the pool deck and then hit the main buffet which can often mean longer queues and a need to wait for a table. However, most ships have multiple dining venues open on embarkation day which are included in your cruise fare, so it’s worth finding out which ones are open if you want a sit-down lunch that feels a little more laidback.
